San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

Looks like Shanny might have learned his lesson from that horrible second half he called in the SB against the Pats a few years back...

”Always, as a play-caller, you usually want to attack the defense,” Shanahan said. ”When they load the box, you want to find a weakness and throw the ball. But when you sit there and watch the defense play as well as they are, you also want to make sure you don't turn it over, and especially if you have a lead. You take some of those elements into your decision-making, it makes it a lot easier for me to stick with it.”
That SB has always been in the back of my mind. I’ve worried that when things come together, they’re winning games and had a lead to protect, that Shanahan would stay ultra-aggressive and piss away leads. Well, 33 passes against 41 runs (that netted just 99 yards), so it took some patience and maturity to suppress the urge to let ‘er rip and risk turnovers. In the fourth quarter 12 runs to just 3 passes across 4 possessions. Nice.

I mean a Shanahan is still coach... the one that up what by 2 scores in the super bowl and instead of running it was chucking it down the field...
That's long been a concern for most Niner fans, but this season seems to be showing that Shanahan has matured as a play caller...

Last week, with both starting tackles down, the 49ers ran the ball 41 times despite averaging just 2.4 yards per carry. This week, they ran it 39 times even though they could only muster 3.5 yards per carry. And it can’t be easy for a playcaller as good as Kyle Shanahan to subjugate his ego and call a game that way. He admitted as much to me last week, saying it’s the reality of who his team is—it just makes sense to ride the defense now, and shortening the game works to support that group. Good example of a head coach being a head coach, and not just focusing on one area or another.
This team's bread and butter is the defense. The offense is currently without both starting tackles, and their beast fullback. So, right now, offensively they're quite limited, which was exasperated by the monsoon they played in yesterday. The good news is all three of those guys should be back in the next 4-6 weeks, so the offense should get better with them back. The better news is that Shanny has been showing all season that he knows how to play to his team's strength(s).
