San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

I took a small bite on the odds for SF to win the NFC West. Jared Goff has his share of bad performances, and I think the Niners can legitimately make a run at the division - and maybe the entire NFC.
I'm not biting off that hard just yet...they haven't played particularly good teams thus far. But, they certainly seem to have the pieces to be competitive; a good DL and strong defense overall, a nice stable of RBs, and a solid QB.

I still have a couple of concerns that we should find out a lot about over the next few weeks:
  • The OL. It's been okay so far. I want to see how it holds up against stiffer competition.
  • The WRs. Again, they've been pretty good so far, but nobody in the group stands out as a major playmaker.
  • The secondary. It was bad last year, and they didn't add anybody that you would think would improve it this much. But, a lot of people really like Saleh, so maybe this is things coming together is his second year.
I think Garoppolo is the kind of QB that can get a team over the hump. He might not put up the most gaudy stats, but he gets his guys to buy in, and his football IQ is very, very high. Mostert/Breida/Coleman (if healthy) is a strong RB rotation. Shanahan is one of the better offensive minds in the game. This offense is a lot of fun to watch. And I'm seeing more consistent play from the talented DL and a much stronger pass rush this year, which is a big reason the secondary play has improved so drastically. I like the LBs, too; not much star power, there's no Willis or Bowman, but they're very solid.
