S Vonn Bell (All B1G, All-American, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

Sans a 67 yard pass play. They did not slow NW down on that possession.
They had one big mistake is the second half...they allowed 10 points, vice the 20 points they allowed in the first half. Also, on that play, the ball was zipped perfectly in between a short and deep defender and was inches from being tipped. I would rather have the DBs press and be aggressive and give a up one big play in a half then play back 8-12 yards from the LOS and get ripped to shreds...

So when Doran Grant watched the QB scramble instead of his guy that does not qualify as a big mistake?

You are aware football is a game of inches right? I thought the angle taken on the WR was poor leading to the big play, but you will have that with a more aggressive defense, although if a better angle was taken I don't think the play goes for as much as it does.

Lets get back to Bell though. I do think he will have more of a role going forward if he can prove to the coaches during the next week and a half that he is improving in the defensive scheme and is coming up to speed on everything else.

Agreed, but doubt thw coaches would do that. Brown is and always has been inconsistent. I'd ease bell in for the iowa game, and use him with brown for penn st

Sorry pnuts let me clarify that....3 man rush + 12 yard cushions = bad position. I think Vonn is going to be a great one here, I just don't know how he is going to make the entire scheme work all of the sudden. I'd be happy to hear how giving every receiver a free release and private bubble to catch the ball while rushing 3 is either protecting our weakness or playing to our strengths.

There was a bad sequence on NW's opening drive in the 2nd quarter where Brown was supposed to defend the deep route and got totally lost and on the next play got completely trucked by the NW ball carrier. Love Brown as a kid who stuck it out by if you can't perform those basic duties by now it's time for someone else to have a chance.

And your point is? I'd rather have the rare big play happen against us--even if it was only a matter of inches--than be surgically dissected because we're not within 2 yards of a WR when he catches the ball due to being 10 yards of the LOS at the snap...

You can have your coveted last word. I prefer to focus on Bell and any impact he may have with the team going forward now that Bryant's void needs filled.

Love this comment and would love to see Bell flying around in the secondary. It's a perfect time to put him in against weak part of the big ten. I hate that we play down to our opponents and don't take over the game by blitzing our LBs. I mean seriously the same lame defensive scheme is getting really old pin our ears back and get after the QB. Play press coverage and blitz with 5 or 6. We dominated on defense against northwestern when we did this. I don't understand why we play against our strengths.

Throw the kid in the fire...it is time. Two weeks to get him ready.

Agreed. Bell's talent will takeover much of the time and of course that will come with freshman mistakes. However, the injury to Bryant necessitates this move. Nobody beyond Barnett and D. Grant are cutting it at this point imo...and the others aside from Roby are not going to cut it physically against whoever we play in our bowl game down the road. Bell at least has the ability to play against top-tier talent.

Agreed. I would rather give up the big play a couple times a game rather than have the DBs play 5 yards off and let them get 4-10 yards on every pass. The former means the other team will score (3 or 7) 2-3 times a game on a big play. The latter means they can dink and dunk us across the field almost every time they get the ball and them scoring a lost more than 2-3 times. Plus the big play gets our defense off the field and rested rather than a sustained drive that wears them out. This is why I'm happy on offense Urban doesn't go for the big plays all that often and give the defense time to rest.

Urban is on record as saying "there's only a 3% chance of a team going 80 yards". We played this style for years and won.
Urban knows what he wants. Urban knows how to get there. Some one in Vegas said recently "if we played Baylor on a neutral field, Baylor would be favored by 7." That's not taking into account who we have as coach. That is just dumb. We have one of the two best coaches in the country and that counts for a lot! We saw that last year. Bottom line is, if Bell were the "answer" he would be in there. But I look forward to seeing him play, eventually.

Truthfully, if he can't crack the lineup over some of the people that have been playing back there, I think it's a legitimate concern freshman or not. The fact than another freshman is starting on the DL, where the talent is deeper, makes me believe his lack of playing time has nothing to do with his age. That being said, coming out of the bye, I expect that he will be rotating, if not starting in place of Corey Brown. The idea that the defense somehow can't live with his freshman mistakes is laughable to me since it's been an essential track meet back there with upperclassmen back occupying every spot on the two-deep all season.
