S/LB Tyler Moeller (official thread)

I'm a fan of having four down lineman even in obvious passing situations. I would take out Homan and put in Nathan Williams at DE. You would have four fast DLs, a big MLBer and a couple of LB/safety hybrids to defend the pass.

Ya...3-4 D's aren't known for small DE's and safety sized OLB's.

Thad Gibson is a 3-4 LB, not Tyler Moeller or Jermale Hines.

That's why I prefer a 4-3 D. :wink2:

Right. I was agreeing with your point.

The poster who brought up a 3-4 suggested Thad at DE with Hines and Moller as outside LB's. It would be very difficult to apply any pressure without penetration from the interior.

Thad's biggest strength is rushing the outside with speed. 3-4 DE's apply pressure from the inside and open the outside for the pass rush.

Gotcha. Heyward is a guy who can wreak havoc inside, although Rose is not strong enough for that role yet. I see him losing balance and landing on his butt a lot.

I don't want to continue to divert thi sthread from Tyler...but Thad will be a great 3-4 Linebacker in the league for years. He's much more fluid than Vernon was, and can make the adjustment much easier. Vernon can still learn the 3-4 in New York but he'd be much better suited as a 4-3 pass rusher in a system like the Colts.

The Buckeyes could run a nasty 3-4 /c they recruit big DE's. Honestly, a DL of:

Heyward
Abdullah
Rose

is close to NFL ize with exception to Nader in the middle. Even next year, you could run something similar.

But to run an effective 3-4, you'd put a guy like Thad on the outside as a linebacker. And he'd be a beast out there.

I think that by next year Heyward is going to be inside only...Juice while he is a mobile QB, made Heyward look very slow a foot, if you are going to have him on the outside rushing...I think with Gibson, Wilson, Williams, and Wells that allows us to leave Heyward inside to go along with Denlinger, Larimore, Rose, Goebell, and whoever else, but I would say we run with those 9 on the Dline...

Now back to LB, and back on topic of the thread...

We are absolutely loaded...Homan, Moeller, Hines, Sabino...I have those guys as my top 4...But then you have Spitler who will be a senior, Rolle, Sweat and incoming Bell, Klein, and Whiting...

I go with in a 4-3 Homan, Moeller and Sabino...If they struggle against the run you will see Spitler in there for sure...in the nickel with the start I believe you keep Hinest there, and play him in the nickel and put Sabino and Moeller on the field, or maybe Moeller and Homan...

I, too, would love to see Moeller and Hines on the field together.

I see Hines staying at safety because he brings the "heavy hit" that we have been missing so far.

I wonder if moving Coleman to CB next year might be a good move. Coleman seems a bit small for S, but is otherwise solid in coverage.

The only way that 3-4 would work would be if Rowell is an effective nose tackle.

DE - Heyward
NT - Rowell
DE - Denlinger/Rose

Goebel and Mobley could rotate in at end (assuming Mobley has added a few pounds, I thought I heard something about him coming in looking a lot bigger than his listed 265). Denlinger would also probably have to take some snaps at nose to relieve Rowell as well.

OLB - Gibson
ILB - Sabino
ILB - Spitler/Homan
OLB - Williams

The problem with this is that it doesn't really cater to the Ohio State's current roster at all. There are a lot of linebackers like Sweat, Moeller, and Hines if you want to include him there who aren't pass rushers (and therefore not outside material) and not big enough to play inside. At the same time, there are a lot of defensive linemen who aren't fluid enough to be linebackers and not big enough to kick inside as 3-4 ends. Bad move IMO.

Which means that he has to get back up over 300lbs, that is taking a big risk

I'm not sure quite how much of a risk it is considering his weight has ranged from 285 or so or whatever it is now to close to 400. That means that he should be able to naturally hold something like 320 without too many issues in terms of getting to the weight and maintaining it. The problem is that its a slippery slope and who knows when gaining 30 pounds becomes 45 when the season ends and then maybe 60 during the offseason. He could easily balloon back up which, as you suggest, isn't really a risk worth taking in general, but furthermore so because the rest of the players don't fit the scheme that well.

Sounds like Tyler had himself a nice spring game. Same goes for Connor Smith. With four Colerain players in attendance to watch the game (Grace, Dukes, Williams and Durham) I have to say it was a good day to be Cardinal and a Buckeye. :)
