Week 1: Glenville vs. Mentor
Stoking the fire
Glenville linebacker Jermale Hines is quietly efficient, but coaches want him to start making noise

After living five years in a five-bedroom ranch home on 18 acres of land in Georgia, surrounded by a swimming pool, fishing pond and basketball court, Jermale Hines had had enough.

Not even the sight of coyotes, eagles, buzzards and deer excited the 6-2, 210-pounder who'd accomplished everything he could in two seasons as a quarterback, running back and linebacker at small Berrien High School in Nashville, which is 125 miles from Jacksonville, Fla.

"I was bored and wanted to come back to Cleveland, to the city life," Hines said. "We all did."

So Bobby and April Hines, with their six sons and four daughters, moved "back home" to the Glenville area -- a stone's throw away from where dad once starred as a quarterback and linebacker at East High School.

It didn't take long for Jermale to get excited about playing for Glenville. That's what a 32-0, opening-night victory at Mentor in a packed stadium can do.

And it was a fruitful Tarblooders debut for Hines. He posted 12 tackles and two sacks en route to a junior season in which he finished with 77 tackles, 12 sacks and three interceptions.

"The guys told me how big the Mentor game was, but you don't know until you experience it," said Hines, whose brother Berchard is a junior cornerback/safety, and brother Xavier is a sophomore defensive end. "Everyone was pumped up. It was awesome."

While listening to Jermale rehash the game, Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr. rolled his eyes as if to say "talk is cheap."

"Jermale's a quiet kid who we're trying to make a leader out of with some kind, any kind of emotion," said Ginn, comparing Hines to his son, Ted Jr. "Little Ted was quiet and reserved until he was a senior. Well, it's Jermale's senior year so we're hoping he opens up."

Opening the eyes of recruiters from high-profile college programs hasn't been a problem. Michigan, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois and Louisville are some of the schools hoping to lure Hines.

Hines will start at outside linebacker, but his role on offense isn't set. He has been playing quarterback and receiver during training camp.

"[Jermale's] capable of doing it all," Ginn said. "It all depends how quickly he picks up our offense."

Regardless, the guy they call "Georgia" will be on the minds of many Tarblooders opponents.
