THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

GLENDALE, Ariz. ? A freak moment on the football field brought them together nine months ago and eventually forged their friendship.
On Monday night, the two Buckeyes will further be united in spirit and goal. Kurt Coleman will play special teams and some defensive back against Florida in the national championship game.

It's being said that Coleman improved so much over the winter that he has now evoked comparisons to three-time All American Mike Doss - and some experts believe that Coleman could become even better. Doss was never as fast as Coleman and I think Coleman has better ball skills.
Heresy? We'll see.

I'd like to see Coleman come up and pop someone before I start making those comparisons. Not to say he cannot match the level of play Doss had by excelling in other areas, but we are talking Mike Doss here.

Coleman's a physical player, but he needs to add about 15 pounds and win a NC before we can mention him in the same sentence with a 3 time All American.

a national championship is not a requirement. there have been numerous osu greats who never won a nc.

Bingo. Archie Griffin comes to mind first...probably the #1 Buckeye of all-time doesn't have a ring. National titles are great, but are no way a requirement for individual greatness...

The question in my mind is "is this wishful thinking that Coleman will be this good" or is he already showing that he WILL be this good.
Only time will tell. While we all wish that he does and even exceeds these accolades, wishing doesn't make it happen.
I think that time will tell. Doss was a good safety for sure but we have had a great many of them. I don't rate Doss in my top 5, but then again I've seen 50 years of safeties.
I do think that Coleman could be an outstanding player and I love his play.

it would be nice if Coleman helps us get one

Not to get off-topic too much, but the first thing that comes to my mind about Mike Doss is him passing up the big bucks and deciding to come back to school to win a national championship. If he had not done that, it is possible that we would still be clamoring for our first NC since '68.

Mike Doss: State Champs at McKinley
National Champs at The Ohio State University
Superbowl Champs with the Indianapolis Colts.
