Despite assumptions from many, Ohio State junior safety and former Glenville High star Donte Whitner did not confirm Friday that he is headed for the NFL.
Ted Ginn Sr., his high school coach whom Whitner said he would consult, said late Friday that as far as he knew, Whitner was still making up his mind. Thursday, Whitner said he had spoken with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and that he had made his decision and would announce it Friday.
Reached at 3 p.m. Friday, Whitner said he would have news in an hour, then did not return several messages the rest of the day.
"I left it up to him and Tress," Ginn said. "Any decision was between him and Tress."
Tressel was not available for comment Friday.
Whitner's name appeared on a flyer advertising a Zanesville, Ohio, autograph show scheduled for Wednesday that will feature most of the senior Ohio State football stars. Players wishing to keep their eligibility can't participate in such shows, where they earn money for their signatures. But a store manager at Sports Zone in the Colony Square Mall in Zanesville said Friday that Whitner's name had been pulled from the advertising because the expected confirmation of his NFL declaration had not yet come.
Ohio State officials were assuming Whitner was headed to the NFL, in part based on the autograph show advertising.
Whitner has been told by NFL officials that he would likely be drafted in the late first round or in the second round. He made 73 tackles this season, third on the team. If he returns, Whitner would be a team leader and potential captain on a defense losing seven senior starters.
Ohio State has not heard any news on junior cornerback Ashton Youboty, who also is considering his NFL options. Underclassmen must declare for the draft by Jan. 15.
