S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

Anybody who doesn't see this as a near devastating loss is kidding themselves. It's not always about simply what a kid brings onto the field as much as it is what he brings to the team itself. In my opinion, Doss probaably performed better on the field as a sophomore and junior than he did as a senior, but the intangibles he brought to the defense were priceless. I saw Whitner as being the same type of leader. He was to be the "glue" to hold the new-D together. Certainly would have been voted a team captain.

This sucks for us, and I HATE the early entries, but do have to wish Donte nothng but the best. He's represented himself and this University to perfection the past three years.

We may be able to replace his athletic ability but not his experience and leadership. He was described as a film room junkie. You could see this pay off in his ability to blow up screens.

I understand why guys like Donte leave early, but I would advise them differently. If you are not going to make obscene money (top 15-20 pick), coming back for your sr. year with a chance at captain posn and NC run may afford you a better long term financial windfall.

If Mike Doss didn't make it in the pros for some reason, do you think he would have a hard time making a decent living in Columbus? I think he could find a secure future in many industries.

Again, if you are marginal to make the huge guaranteed contract (as I feel Donte may be), staying a buckeye for one more year has a big potential pay off.

I dont understand why you would leave early, but his case is an exception IMO. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved for him to come back for his senior season, where the D will be very young, but we will have an explosive offense. If you go early and get drafted in the 3rd round, you make something like $200,000 a year, give or take a little depending on circumstances. You can only play for a maximum of 10 years and everyone knows this is not enough to live on for the rest of his life. Luckily, as someone pointed out earlier, he will be graduated and will have gotten his degree. Just the fact that he is a Buckeye will allow him many opportunities in or around Columbus once his playing days are over. I wish him the best of luck.

Big loss for the OSU defense. I think he made the right decision, it's hard to turn down money.....He's not going to improve himself from a draft status standpoint by sticking around IMHO. Look for Quin Pitcock to become the leader of that defense, him and Youboty (I think he's sticking around, or he would have announced today also). I also think that Patterson will really come on. It seems like the most significant progress comes from the sophomore to the junior year.

Is it possible he is wavering ala Doss?

fwiw.....The Cleveland PD reported that on friday he was to make his announcement in an hour? but never called back and several calls to him (cell? or home?) were not returned. TG Sr. said as far as he knew his decision had not been made.

I'm sure he is going...but maybe a slight glimmer of hope

At this point, it doesn't look like this is a done deal as of yet. There is still hope.

Whitner stays quiet on draft decision

OSU safety is considering early entry to NFL

Plain Dealer Reporter

Despite assumptions from many, Ohio State junior safety and former Glenville High star Donte Whitner did not confirm Friday that he is headed for the NFL.

Ted Ginn Sr., his high school coach whom Whitner said he would consult, said late Friday that as far as he knew, Whitner was still making up his mind. Thursday, Whitner said he had spoken with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and that he had made his decision and would announce it Friday.

Reached at 3 p.m. Friday, Whitner said he would have news in an hour, then did not return several messages the rest of the day.

"I left it up to him and Tress," Ginn said. "Any decision was between him and Tress."

Tressel was not available for comment Friday.

Whitner's name appeared on a flyer advertising a Zanesville, Ohio, autograph show scheduled for Wednesday that will feature most of the senior Ohio State football stars. Players wishing to keep their eligibility can't participate in such shows, where they earn money for their signatures. But a store manager at Sports Zone in the Colony Square Mall in Zanesville said Friday that Whitner's name had been pulled from the advertising because the expected confirmation of his NFL declaration had not yet come.

Ohio State officials were assuming Whitner was headed to the NFL, in part based on the autograph show advertising.

Whitner has been told by NFL officials that he would likely be drafted in the late first round or in the second round. He made 73 tackles this season, third on the team. If he returns, Whitner would be a team leader and potential captain on a defense losing seven senior starters.

Ohio State has not heard any news on junior cornerback Ashton Youboty, who also is considering his NFL options. Underclassmen must declare for the draft by Jan. 15.

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL

Whitner apparently is leaving early for NFL

Saturday, January 07, 2006

Ohio State safety Donte Whitner is headed to the NFL, a school official said, but Whitner had not publicly declared his intention as of last night.

Whitner, a junior, had said Thursday that he hoped to announce his decision yesterday, but attempts to reach him were unsuccessful.

An Ohio State athletics department representative said Whitner had told some of the coaches he planned to leave school.

If so, he would join junior receiver Santonio Holmes, who declared early for the draft after the Fiesta Bowl on Monday night. OSU beat Notre Dame 34-20.

Junior cornerback Ashton Youboty has yet to speak to the coaches about his intentions, the representative said. Youboty said after the Fiesta Bowl that he also was studying his options.

I find this whole situation very odd. I heard as early as Thursday that he intends to declare, and I posted yesterday an NBC 4 internet column that said the same. However, if he intends to declare, why not just come out and do it? It seems (and again, this is probably wishful thinking) that he's at least having second thoughts.

If anyone goes to the Zanesville autograph session on Wednesday, please let us know if he's there (although by then, we should know for sure anyway).

Let's hope so. Perhaps he's considering the influx of juniors declaring, and watching its affect on his draft status. All the authority suggesting that Whitner is NFL-bound is, for the time being, based upon speculation and hearsay.

Super Jamario, it's time to step up and fulfill your potential. Take a page from your fellow Tarblooder's book and hit that film room.
I think next year will be a re-load rather than a re-build for the Defense, but I wish we had alot more game experience going into the Texas game.

If Donte did indeed stay...could be a great statement for Glenville next year.

Both OSU captains from Glenville (T. Smith & Donte)

and following the season, we could see 3 Glenville alums get drafted on first day of draft (assuming TG took the leap)...that would have to be a first iwould think

all these star juniors coming out has to be killing donte's draft status. regardless of position, 1st-rounder after 1st-rounder is declaring early and i'd say his odds of going in that 1st round are becoming very very slim. if he stays, he could have an NC, a thorpe & MUCH higher draft status.

here's to even more second thoughts and a last second decision to stay with the bucks!

anyone else think youboty is basing his decision upon donte's? i would think if one stays, the other would too. just speculation and opinion. :)
