Whitner heading to the NFL

Another DB, Youboty, considering leaving OSU, too

By Doug Harris
Dayton Daily News
COLUMBUS | One of two Ohio State juniors known to be giving consideration to jumping to the NFL has apparently opted to turn pro.
<!--endtext--><!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> Junior safety Donte Whitner, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound first-team All-Big Ten selection from Cleveland, hasn't been in contact with his coaches and couldn't be reached for comment.
But OSU spokesman Steve Snapp said Saturday that word has reached school officials that Whitner is bypassing his senior year, while junior cornerback Ashton Youboty, another first-team all-conference pick, is still weighing his choices.
"I don't think there's much doubt at all about Donte," Snapp said, "but I think Ashton is still in the decision-making process."
The hard-hitting Whitner, who finished third on the team with 73 tackles, would probably be no worse than a second-round pick, according to draft analyst Jerry Jones.
"He appears to have very good ball skills," Jones said. "He knows what he's tracking.
"He sees it. He finds it. And he's a closer."
Also working in Whitner's favor is the Buckeyes' propensity for turning out NFL-ready DBs, including Chris Gamble, Mike Doss, Nate Clements, Antoine Winfield and Shawn Springs.
"They have a great knack for training defensive backs," Jones said. "There's nobody that doesn't like the defensive backs that school puts out."
Youboty has the potential of going higher than Whitner, according to Jones, because good cornerbacks are harder to find than safeties.
The 6-1, 188-pound Houston native couldn't be reached. But his mother, Jeannet Youboty, said her son as of Saturday hadn't decided to leave OSU.
"He's going to school so far," she said. "I don't know anything more than that."
The Buckeyes did receive some welcomed news when Cleveland Glenville's Robert Rose became the 12th member of the 2006 recruiting class.
Rose is rated as the 17th-best defensive end prospect in the nation by Scout.com and starred in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Saturday.

ESPN has them on their list of underclassmen who have declared for the draft..

Sirjo Welch step right in? He has somewhat disapeared this year after a pretty productive freshmen year on special teams.

Anyways, I think Witner will be another great DB in the pros.
