S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

I think Donte can compete at the next level but telling the media you'll run a 4.3 is putting a lot of pressure on a 40 yd dash. Football is so much more than speed ..if he runs a 4.5 or 4.6 instead is that a bad thing. I guess I still see the picturesof MC at the combine as he embrrassed himself!

I don't think he'll run a 4.6 unless he gets off to a bad start. He seems capable of a 4.3-4.4.

briegg,

I see you're new to the site so I'll indoctrinate you in the proper fashion.

DON'T be a dumb-fuck and base a DB's performance on INT's. They basically mean nothing. Go back to 1996, and the subsequent 1997 draft. All-American Shawn Springs(YES-he made it without intercepting a single pass) goes #3 overall in the NFL draft.

I damn near fell out of my chair after reading your post. :tongue2: Good point on Springs.

You're right, WW, but I think the point he was making was that collectively our defense needs to be more opportunistic next year. I don't think anyone can disagree with that. I'd like to see each of our db's have a couple of picks or more.

good read. nice to see JT helped him in his search, and didn't go down kicking and screaming like petey has been doing lately (with better draft stocks, like Justice, Bing, etc)

CFN discusses Replacements for early entries...

[FONT=verdana, arial, sans serif] S Donte Whitner, Ohio State
Impact: Consequential. Had he returned, Whitner would have been the leader of a Buckeye defense that’ll be without nine starters from last year’s two-loss team. He packs a wallop and, despite playing just one full year as a starter, has very polished field instincts.
Successor: Brandon Mitchell is a veteran with plenty of game experience, while Jamario O’Neal is the hotshot sophomore-to-be with the enormous ceiling. Both might be starting now that Whitner and Nate Salley are off to the NFL.

Mike Mayock (sp) of the NFL network just said in his pre-draft DB assessment that he has Whitner as his #1 safety and said that Donte is, in his opinion, the only "sure thing" safety and the only one in this year's draft he gives a first round grade.

Wow... good for him. They were originally talking about him being a 3rd round pick, behind players like Darnell Bing and Greg Blue. I was upset at first that he left early because I thought he wasnt going to be drafted high, but if he really is going to be drafted high then im happy he left.

Come on Browns!

I believe he will actually go in the second round without Sean Taylor-like size, but still not too shaby at all. And OSU should have a nice crop of players go in the first two rounds (at least six I'd say). :osu:

you're right...I think Palamolu is about 5'10" 212 lbs., but he was also a three year starter, two-time all american, Thorpe award finalist. all honors Whitner could have garnered had he returned next season (minimum all big ten, maybe all american, possibly thorpe finalist etc.) but still without the proven track record T.P. had going into his draft year.

Donte Whitner was every bit the All-American than those safeties actually recognized as such were. Just b/c he wasn't "given" the honor doesn't mean he was a lesser player.

Both Mike Doss and Will Allen were All-American here, and Whitner is every bit as good, and I would argue that his pass coverage skills are better. He is going to be a very good player in the league.

I'm not willing to say that Whitner is "every bit as good" as Mike Doss. Better pass coverage skills? Yeah, probably, but Doss brought huge leadership skills to the table, and while I think Donte is a very good leader I don't think he would have even been to quite the level of Doss if he had returned next season.

I see Whitner and Allen in a similar echelon, and think "Lights Out" will have an exelant Pro career (maybe even better that Doss all said and done), but at this point I take Mike Doss ahead of Donte on my "All OSU Team" and will wait to reserve judgement on his developement at the next level...great potential that I think gets taken second round, and wish him all the luck in the world with his career.
