S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

Here's a link to all the times posted today...

Linky

4.4 flat is indeed a fast time, but it's middle-of-the-road this year in comparison to the other times put up by the DBs at the combine.

40-yard dash

Tye Hill Clemson 4.30
Johnathan Joseph S. Carolina 4.31
Tim Jennings Georgia 4.32
Michael Huff Texas 4.34
Daniel Bullocks Nebraska 4.38
Willie Andrews Baylor 4.38
Antoine Bethea Howard 4.39
Jason Allen Tennessee 4.39
Kelly Jennings Miami (Fla.) 4.39
Donte' Whitner Ohio St. 4.40
Dee Webb Florida 4.41
Pat Watkins Florida St. 4.42
Richard Marshall Fresno St. 4.42
Gerrick McPhearson Maryland 4.42
David Pittman Northwestern St. 4.44
Ko Simpson S. Carolina 4.45
Derrick Martin Wyoming 4.45
Danieal Manning Abilene Christian 4.46

Well, beg to differ a little, the list you show is the leader board from Group 11 and 12 combined. There were a greater number of DBs at the combine than just those 18 (in which list Donte' was 10th). So, he was not middle of the road, more like top-tier. Fastest Safety honors probably go to Daniel Bullocks out of Nebraska (I think).

Somewhere near 59 DBs were on the invite list, 51 ran as DBs, one or two chose to run for different positions (like Hester from Miami), there were also those who could not run due to nagging injuries.

Safeties
What a group this was and the speed some of these guys showed was eye-opening. The performance of Texas' Michael Huff really stood out and after running a 4.34 at 6-0 and 204lbs. he probably guaranteed himself a spot in the Top 10 overall. Daniel Bullocks carried over the momentum he started at the Senior Bowl and impressed with his 4.38 clocking, which leads some to believe he might be an even better prospect than his brother Josh was a year ago. You also have to be happy for Jason Allen of Tennessee, who is returning from a serious hip injury yet still clocked a 4.39 which should send his stock upwards. Donte Whitner of Ohio St. showed his strength (18 reps) and speed (4.40) and looks like a first rounder while Ko Simpson of South Carolina measured in at about what he was listed at in college and ran a solid 4.45 time in the forty. There were also some so-so performances but mentioning them would just take away from the outstanding effort put in by the others. This could be one of the better safety classes to come around in a very long time both in terms of quality at the top as well as depth throughout.

I honestly cant believe whitner and youbooty are going in the first round.. more power to him. Thats awesome.
All of us, well maybe not all of us but most, were putting down Youboty and Whitner when they made their decisions. However, it was their decision and I think we were just selfish in wanting them back for another year. For every other Safety that declared early, I heard cries of "Well so and so just declared so that means Donte just dropped a spot" when really Donte will in all liklihood be the next Safety picked after Michael Huff. Well, I for one and happy to hear they will be top flight draft picks and go somewhere and contribute mightily. More power to them!!!

Youboty will go in the first round. Good CB's are commonly first round picks. Safeties, on the otherhand typically have to be REALLY special to go in round one. Donte, as good as he was in tOSU, isn't on that level. Mike Doss, one of the best Safeties to ever wear the Scarlet & Gray was a second rounder. Donte will be in that same area(2nd-3rd round). That's not to say he won't become a star in the NFL, but the fact is safeties just don't get drafted that high.

I will probably start a holy war here but imo as far as how they project to the NFL, Whitner far exceeds Doss imo.

To be as concise as possible, everyone knew Doss was cover challenged and therefore was an "in the box" type of DB. Whitner can easily go back and play FS, he isn't limited to being a run stopping SS like Doss.

Doss is one of the most beloved Buckeyes in recent times and for very good reason. That said when guys come out that are actually better all around safties than Doss was, its not blasphemy to say they'll get drafted higher.

If a team has a need at Safety with a late 1st round pick, Whitner could very well be taken. Off the top of my head the Bengals and Steelers would be likely canidates. If not he'll now go EARLy 2nd round...no way he's still around in the 3rd.

Doss will more than likely have a better college career than any saftey that goes through OSU in the next 20 years or so. He will not be the best NFL player of any safety that goes through OSU in the next 20 years.

I really really hope that Whitner lasts until the Browns 2nd round pick. He will be a playmaker that the Browns fans would love, and is better than anyone they have in the backfield right now. Whitner in the 2nd and Kudla in the 3rd would make all Browns fans very happy. Hopefully the Browns can fill their DL or OT needs in the first round or FA. The lack of a new CBA will help this.
