S/C Coach Mickey Marotti (Official Thread)

“I think everybody had to look in the mirror. Everybody,” Marotti said Friday while meeting with the media for the first time since that loss. “Everybody in this building from players, coaches, athletic trainers, nutritionists, equipment managers, everything and just kind of go back and look at what happened, why. And then turn over every stone and try to come up with a plan.”

I've always heard good things from Coach Marotti. Inside and outside the program... categorically.

But... at what point is there a discussion (or maybe there is, already) about how/why/whether all these nagging injuries - and they're continuing to pile up - are related to conditioning?

I am no expert, but the injuries were there even before we came into the meat-grinder of the conference games.

Not this year. If ir becomes a 3 or more year trend that's when it's time to talk about it. One year is not a pattern

For sure we're not in year 3, but this year isn't the first year. Last year was not too much different from this year.

The availability reports for the *ichigan game and the rose bowl game last year were as lengthy. Just two examples... I think 18/19 players out for those games (not counting Olave and Garrett for the rose bowl).

Having said that, I haven't done a side-by-side analysis between last year and this year. And maybe it's not apples to apples to compare the availability reports from the end of the season with those from the beginning of the season.

Isn't that just the nature of football? Injuries can pile up in a violent sport, and sometimes you have bad luck, and sometimes its good

From everything I have read there is not a more highly sophisticated and technical approach to S&C than Marotti's... hell, the military uses him to assess some approaches, apps and devices
any assumption that anyone can beat mother nature at her game is interesting

I went to HS with a kid who ran cross country...
became 2-time All American in college
qualified 5 times for the Olympics
Rated top-10 in the world
Didn't make it to 58

Bosa's... was extremely disappointed Nick tore a groin muscle in a yr that coulda been... and now Joey tears his... genetics/DNA...
How many folks blamed the turf last year on our injuries..

Ped State, Iowa, ND are 1,2, 3 with Mick #4 in the eyes of NFL Combine...
Our expectations and feelings for Coach Mick are god-like... but only one supreme being controls DNA

That’s an interesting consideration. The DNA we’re talking about here is kinda of like a F1 car. The tolerances are not like the car in your driveway. At the end of the day, if you want your car / body to be at the limits of science, you’ve got to expect that there will be little room for anything to go wrong. Sadly, an F1 engine rebuild is easier than recovering from a hammy pull.

Field turf. NFL stars started a petition to ban artificial turf in football after Odell Beckham's Super Bowl injury (yahoo.com)

You cannot get tougher without the risk of injury

Ohio State needed to get tougher

They seem to have recruited sufficient depth to handle the bad luck they’re having with injuries

I’ll continue to trust the coaches on this, and that includes the strength coach

apologies for using that phrase unironically
Yup, you need the best to go up against the best in practice to get better. There’s no way Egbuka gets better playing against PWOs or true frosh, as opposed to going against Cam Brown, Burke, etc
I’m sure Bama practices this same way, and has for years. And I hate to keep bringing that program up, but they are on the mountaintop, I get it that UGA won it all last year, but Bama has been the most consistently successful team in CFB for well over a decade now, with no end in sight.

I've always said I would add a Yoga element to all strength training. Weider principles all the way back to the 60's, Longer muscles are stronger muscles. More flexibility also prevents a couple ankles from being injured by getting rolled up on or hammy's that are playing through cramping and the like. Be strong but be flexible as much as you can.

Just the nature of a more physical brand of football. As some posters above have said you can't practice harder vs equated talent and expect just as few injuries.

It might seem like a lot but I think the corner depth issues makes everything feel 10x worse.

We are beat up at WR too but no one is worried about that position because we've recruited well (same for RB). If corner had 2 more options we'd feel differently about this injury rash.

Luckily after Sparty we get a BYE. Hopefully the guys can make quick work of MSU and be out by the half.
