S Anderson Russell (official thread)

Quotes from A-Russ after practice yesterday.

official.site

Anderson Russell, sophomore safety

On his dropped interception against Youngstown State

"Rory was just teasing me about it at practice. It doesn't really bother me (that I dropped the pass). You can't let it get to you. I know I can still catch. Mentally, I'll be fine."

On the Ohio State secondary

"We aren't new (together). We all came in here in the same class, so we've worked with each other a lot. We trust each other and are confident."

On returning kicks

"I don't get to handle the ball that often, so it's exciting. You have everyone running around trying to make plays."

The secondary led by Anderon and Malcolm is the one areas of the entire roster I have no worries about... Russell, Coleman, and Jenkins, and even Washington all play fast and look to have that Silver Bullets attitude to them.. Now if we can just get the front 7 to play that way

Tear off the old block for Russell

COLUMBUS -- If Anderson Russell ever needed inspiration during his comeback from a torn ACL last year, he had it in his father, who endured a similar injury.

Kevin Russell had reconstructive knee surgery when he was hit from behind while playing at Tennessee State. He tore nearly every ligament in his knee at a time when technology wasn't what it is today.

''They butchered my knee,'' Kevin said.

Not the case with Anderson. In one of the newest breakthroughs in ACL repairs, doctors used an Achilles tendon from a cadaver to repair his knee last year. The surgery was a complete success, since he was running and working out with the team during practice in Arizona for the national championship game.

Hey, that sure was nice of someone from scUM's defense to donate their achilles tendon. I wonder which cadaver it was? Well, it's not like they were using it anyway....

Like I was watching Shaun of the Dead the other day, and then I realized it wasn't Shaun of the Dead, it was a replay of a scUM game and I simply mistook their defenders for zombies getting their brains bashed in by a slow white guy with a criket bat.

that Duke was his only other option besides tOSU.

Tressel's consistent ability to find hidden gems and turn them into stars is just amazing. For a kid whose only other offer was Duke, to be starting at safety on the second-best defense in the country, highlights that Ohio State is one of the best in the country at identifying talent and then developing that talent.

I wonder how many times a recruiter takes a second look at a guy, that they were maybe on the fence about in regards to an offer, after Ohio State makes an official offer. It would be interested to pick some brains from the top tier schools in that regard. I have started to notice the USC's, Florida's, Texas and others end up getting in on some of our top recruits late. Could be an area thing or it could just be that people around the country are saying "Hey they know how to recruit. Lets keep an eye on them!"

As I recall, JT got some inside "sleeper" information on Russell from a coach and/or former player. I'm sure it's somewhere back in the thread.

See The Morning-Journal article grad posted at the top of the page ...

No one was overly excited when Russell initially committed to Ohio State. According to Rivals.com, he was just a two-star recruit out of Marist High School in Georgia. He said the only other scholarship offers were from Duke and Connecticut, although his father said Georgia Tech also had some interest.

Jim Tressel and the Ohio State coaches were tipped off to him by Doc Spurgeon, an old friend of Tressel's who was serving as an assistant coach at Marist. Former OSU defensive backs coach Mel Tucker checked out Russell, then a running back in Marist's wishbone offense.

Duke, UConn and GT? Face it. He was brought in to pad the APR. The playing time is a bonus. :tongue2:

From post #50, back in 2004

"Doc Spurgeon is in touch with everybody up at Ohio State and he works down here with us at Marist," Russell said. "He let the coaches up there know about me and they showed some interest in me and so I went up there to camp this summer. I guess it was about a month ago that they offered me a scholarship after seeing me play."?

Russell was first introduced to Ohio State by Marist assistant coach Doc Spurgeon, a close friend and confidant of Jim Tressel. Spurgeon was involved with Tressel and the Youngstown State football program from afar for many years.
