Not to be too nitpicky, but the Iowa % differences are off. Your calculation is giving them credit for +9 yards. I think us holding them to negative yardage screwed up your math (can't say I blame you though).

Good stuff.
Well actually his calculation is consistent. It shows -5.09%, though I can see how that is confusing when everyone else is expressed as the percentage fraction of yards gained versus OSU / yards gained against all others. They lost yards against OSU, that's negative, divide that by their typical yards gained of 176 and you will end up with a small negative number.

Good stuff.

Thanks for the complement, but I don't see what you're trying to point out.

The spreadsheet is doing the same math for that row as for all the others.

176.75 - (-9) = 185.75 every day of the week

-9/176.75 = -5.09% (when expressed as %) even on the 2nd tuesday of every week

So where is the math screwed up?

yargh!! sandgk beat me by 11 minutes. That's what I get for letting my son talk to me when I'm trying to type a post

Since I started this thread by comparing our defense to the team ranked ahead of us in rushing defense (Nebraska), let's get back to that theme. How do we compare to the teams that are ranked ahead of us now?

(Has anyone noticed that all 3 of these teams are in the Big12, 2 in the North?)

For this comparison, unlike the year-year comparison, I will factor out the head-to-head games. In other words, this compares how you did vs your opponents average in their OTHER games.

  • OSU has played MUCH-MUCH-MUCH better offenses (you knew that)
  • Their opponents paltry averages (by comparison) have been posted against Big-12 schedules (or should I say Texas and the 11 Dwarves)
  • Kansas played a provisional IA opponent (Fla Atl) and a IAA opponent, rendering their results less meaningful (I'm being nice).
  • Kansas' other OOC game was against Louisiana Tech.
  • OSU STILL posts a significantly better YPG differential.
  • OSU STILL posts a better YPC differential.
  • OSU comes very close to Kansas in % of OPP YPC, in spite of their number coming against a Betty Crocker Schedule.
Let's face it, the OSU rush defense, in spite of the melt-down against the #1 rush offense in the country (for one-half only), is STILL the best that there's been in at least 5 years.

If anyone is interested in seeing the game-by-game numbers let me know.

The previous post (after editing) provides tangible evidence that OSU has faced much better rushing offenses than the teams ranked ahead of them in rushing defense. Further, it shows that OSU has fared better when that fact is taken into consideration.

Since we have discussed all of the important issues already today (beating scUM, beating ND in a bowl game, winning out, beating scUM, winning a BCS bowl game, and did I mention beating scUM?); what are the chances that we end the year with #1 Rushing Defense bragging rights?

As you can see by comparing this with the table in the previous post, the Big 12 teams seem likely to stay where they are; whereas OSU's upcoming opponents average about 28 fewer yards per game than our past opponents. We still face a tougher slate than they do, but we have a very good chance of catching them (and staying ahead) in spite of that.

We held Illinois to 68 yards on 33 carries today. Our season rushing defense is now 689 yards on 294 carries in nine games (76.55 ypg). Kansas held Nebraska to 21 yards on 22 attempts, which makes their season totals 577 yards on 301 carries, also in nine games (64.11 ypg). Oklahoma had a bye week this week, and remains at 69.3 ypg.

Thus, Kansas is the new leader in rushing defense, with Oklahoma second and us third.

We'll get some help here if the defense takes it. Kansas goes to Austin this coming weekend and Oklahoma still plays OSU and A&M. While neither of those opponents appear to be serious threats to win, they can both chew up a lot of yards on the ground.

It was very clear, very early yesterday, that the coaches care much less about the subject of this thread than do we (and that's the way we like it).

We played to stop the pass, and we did just that in SPECTACULAR fashion, albeit against a total weakling of an opponent. Fewer than 100 yards passing on 24 attempts is SICK-SICK-SICK. We knew we could play to stop the pass and still keep the rush in check, and that's what we did. We could have sold out to stop the rush, but we chose to win the surest way.

A marked contrast to this was Penn State's approach against Wisconsin. Going up against Calhoun, they figured (correctly) that the surest way to win was to sell out to stop the rush. Calhoun was held to 38 yards, and the Badgers overall were pushed back to the tune of -11 yards.

On the other hand, the Nittany Lions gave up > 9 yards per attempt through the air. Contrast that to OSU's < 4 yards per attempt given up to Illinois.

That is why the Badgers could at least score, while the Illini Offense posted a donut.

In the end, yesterday proved that leading the nation in Rushing Defense is fine; but dominating on the scoreboard is what the game is all about.

The coaches have their priorities in order.

Here is an update to the Differential Rushing defense comparison. Mililani correctly pointed out that this analysis compares a team to their opponents' opponents, and so must be taken with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, I think even Mili would acknowledge that OSU has faced better rushing offenses than have the Big-12 posers.

Recall that for this comparison, unlike the year-year comparison, the head-to-head games are factored out. In other words, this compares how a team performed vs their opponents' average in their opponents' OTHER games.

The analysis remains the same:

  • OSU has played MUCH-MUCH-MUCH better offenses (you knew that)
  • Their opponents paltry averages (by comparison) have been posted against Big-12 schedules (or should I say Texas and the 11 Dwarves)
  • Kansas played a provisional IA opponent (Fla Atl) and a IAA opponent, rendering their results less meaningful (I'm still being nice).
  • Kansas' other OOC game was against Louisiana Tech.
  • OSU STILL posts a significantly better YPG differential.
  • OSU STILL posts a better YPC differential.
  • OSU STILL holds opponents to lower % of their YPG and YPC averages.

Add to this that OSU did not stack to stop the run against Illinois (or for that matter most of their schedule).

Kansas dropped like a rock after getting pasted by Texas. We're now the #2 rushing defense in the country:
