To be expected with YSU.

Alabama putting a goose egg on Clemson is an eye opener.

It remains to be seen if it says more about Clemson than the Tide.

Clemson replaced 4 on the OL IIRC. They may yet gel, but what happened Saturday can't help their confidence. I wouldn't be surprised to see them continue to struggle.

As for expecting it with YSU: Other FBS teams played worse FCS opponents. While Alabama's performance has to be called most impressive last Saturday, it is worth noting that the Penguins were the only team with negative rushing yards.

Tressel Era Rushing - FBS

The top 10 teams in rushing defense, 2001-2009

EDIT: Games against FCS (I-AA) opponents ARE counted (When originally posted, I had lost track of which spreadsheet I got this from)

Rk_Team__________YPG_______YPC_
1__TCU__________85.189____2.575
2__Ohio State___95.246____2.930
3__USC_________100.087____3.033
4__Oklahoma____102.100____3.087
5__Texas_______103.526____3.119
6__Alabama_____104.774____3.216
7__LSU_________105.821____3.233
8__Va Tech_____105.915____3.102
9__Oregon St.__108.858____3.139
10_Iowa________109.348____3.087

Ohio State is the only team from a BCS-AQ conference to have held their FBS opponents to < 100 yards per game on the ground during the Tressel era.

Ohio State is also the only team from a BCS-AQ conference to hold their FBS opponents to < 3 yards per carry during the Tressel era.

Differential Rushing Defense -- 2001-2009

Tressel Era Differential Rushing Defense

Rk_Team__________DRD_
1__TCU__________0.560
2__Ohio State___0.582
3__Texas________0.636
4__Oklahoma_____0.642
5__USC__________0.644
6__LSU__________0.687
7__Alabama______0.690
9__Iowa_________0.693
8__Va Tech______0.710
10_Boise St.____0.746

The most interesting thing about this (to me anyway) is that the gap between #2 and #3 is bigger than between any other adjacent teams in FBS, with the sole exception of the last two. Idaho (#119) has a DRD that is .056 ahead of Western Kentucky (#120), and the Hilltoppers have only been in FBS for the past 2 years. The gap between OSU and Texas is .054; which is [strike]at least 5 times[/strike] larger than any other gap in the top 117.

These numbers make me respect TCU that much more. The flat out get after it on defense.

No question. TCU is very respectable on defense.

But IMHO, putting up those numbers in the Mountain West does not impress as much as what the Buckeyes have done in the Big Ten.

Agreed...but also you have the argument that they are going up against less potent offenses but also have less talent. You can only go out and play who is on the schedule and TCU has shut a lot of people down.

5 times any other gap? I'm not sure about the math here. Just looking at the few examples given, the gap between USC and LSU is .043, just a little behind our .054.

whoops -- good catch

EDIT: I obviously was looking at the Differential SCORING Defense numbers when I wrote that. The Buckeyes' dominance in that metric (see the stats thread), is even greater than their dominance vs. the run.

My silly error notwithstanding, the difference between the Buckeyes and the next school is larger than the gap between any other adjacently ranked shools in the top 117.

Point being, Ohio State has been a consistently elite rushing defense to an extent that no one else can match. This is about Ohio State's elite rushing defense, not my pedestrian excel skills.
