Very good work, and that does show total domination, but how bout this little stat.

Notre Dame ran for 48yds. on 34 Carries against UT. That is an avg. of 1.4yds/carry.

Guess what we have a better run defense than Tennessee. Quinn better get his arm loosened up b/c he is going to be throwing a lot.

That's a great point about the Vol run-D cf our run-D.

I asked one of the Domer fans of my acquaintance what they thought of that. His response was that Weis' game plan called for Quinn and the passing game to dominate.

Having actually been at that game I can assure you the play calling did not look that way to me. 34 carries is a lot of running plays.

Fiutak was on the radio last night in the drive-home time doing his CFBNews stint - rating the bowl games.

On Buckeyes and ND in the Fiesta Bowl his take was pretty emphatic. ND could get drilled. Best all-around team that ND will have seen all-year. Certainly the best Defense.

sandgk is right, that is a good point.

In fact, in calculating Tennessee's differential run defense for each game, it turns out that their HIGHEST differential vs. the run all year came against Notre Dame. The most obvious explanation for this is simple if you think about it: Tennessee had by far the best run defense that Notre Dame saw all year, so obviously they'll have a high differential against them. The other teams that Tennessee played saw, for the most part, other very good rushing defenses, so the differential is naturally lower against everyone else.

This brings up another point that should be emphasised. Some people will suggest that the lack of defense in the Big 10 is the reason for OSU's high differential numbers. This seems to be reasonable, but there was a thread started by BB73 and added to brilliantly by Dryden that analyzed this mathematically up one side and down the other, and it just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. While the posts mentioned are great, I hope I'm not being to bold if I suggest that THIS post is the most relevant to this discussion.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Paced by All-American linebacker A. J. Hawk, the Ohio State defense led the nation against the rush this past season, allowing an average of 73.4 yards per game on the ground in 12 starts. Final NCAA statistical leaders were released earlier this week by the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes' stout-hearted defense also finished fifth nationally in both total defense and scoring defense, allowing averages of 281.3 yards and 15.2 points per game, respectively, in those two categories. Ohio State was the Big Ten leader in all three areas.
Jim Tressel's 10-2 squad, which shared the Big Ten title and closed out the season with seven consecutive victories, led the Big Ten in passing efficiency with a 156.6 rating. That figure was good for sixth-place nationally. Ohio State, which rolled up 1,035 yards in total offense in its last two games of the season, was 26th nationally in scoring with an average of 32.7 points per game. On a roll late, the Buckeyes scored 30 or more points in six of their last seven games.
As a result of their 34-20 win over No. 5 Notre Dame in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the Buckeyes have a perfect 4-0 record in BCS games. That figure tops all schools that have played in BCS games.

Good stuff grad. Check this out:http://www.bcsfootball.org/index2.cfm?page=alltime
Some notables:
1) Haha look at scUM on the all time list.
2) Haha look at scUm on the winning percentage list.
3) As expected the Big 10 leads all conferences in games won.
4) That Mountain West lead in winning percentage is a joke.
5) And lastly check out the icons on the far left side of the screen. I know they have ND there because they are Independents but I think it captures the center of my ND hatred. Here's the whole world...and then ND because they're too good to be in the same class as all the "regulars." :shake: Pathetic I know but a Buckeye would notice that. The rest of the world seems blind to it.

Even worse - check out Iowa. lol. After having "the best coach in football", Iowa still sits at a 0-1 record in the BCS.

2006 Rushing Defense

Last year's bunch was ridiculous. They faced a stouter slate of rushing offenses than anyone else in the country, and still had the #1 Rush D. That may never be done again, by anyone.

This year we're ranked #34. But we've faced another tough schedule, rushing-offense-wise. As gap integrity and tackling continue to improve, so will our ranking.

In Differential Rushing Defense however, we are 8th in the country at 60.285%. In other words, we hold opponents to just over 60% over their usual rushing output.

That's right, in Rushing Defense we rank one spot ahead of Duke. In DRD, we rank one spot ahead of LSU.

By Buckeye Standards, we're rebuilding a little ahead of schedule.

I bet our opponents would say we've just reloaded.

The Top 10:

um
Texas
umiami
Rutgers
Florida
FSU
PSU
The Ohio State University
LSU
USC

Although I find the DRD stat very interesting, I think it can also be a little misleading. Like most defensive stats, the nature of the game can play a huge role in the results. For example - hypothetically of course, a dominant team who gets ahead early and then milks the clock will force their opponent to throw more than a team that doesn't. Therefore, a team could end up with an impressive DRD due to a dominating offense - not from a suffocating front seven. Possibly, a more telling stat would be YPC in a differential approach.

Don't get me wrong, DaddyBigBucks, I love the time and effort you've put into these stats, so I'm not suggesting you change anything.

Now THERE'S a more meaningful stat.
Other than Iowa and BC, no weak sisters in that bunch.
This stat seems to correlate more to W/L success.

BC is no slouch. They've had a solid decade. And, Iowa did have 3 straight top 8 finishes.

If Alabama, PSU, and FSU didn't have such anemic offenses, they'd be winning 10 games every year.
