COLUMBUS BLUEJACKETS

Pos. Name Cap Cost Pro-Rated Comments
F Nik Zherdev $2,500,000 $542,500 Plus two more years. No reason to make the deal now - won't get fair value
F Anson Carter $2,500,000 $542,500 Vancouver makes sense. Can't create offense but can certainly finish
F Fredrik Modin $2,204,000 $478,268 Scored 31 last year. Won the Cup with Tampa.
D Bryan Berard $2,500,000 $542,500 Good powerplay player but a defensive liability
D Anders Eriksson $600,000 $130,200 Really emerged as a solid defender this year - shockingly
D Duvie Westcott $500,000 $108,500 Veteran depth player
F David Vyborny $2,200,000 $477,400 Plus one more year - talented player. Columbus should hold onto him.

Kind of sad to see Geoff Sanderson "on the market" again. He was the original Columbus Blue Jacket favorite scoring 30 goals in 2000-2001 and 34 in 2002-2003. Too bad we couldn't have kept him.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

F Geoff Sanderson $1,500,000 $325,500 Plus one more year - can still skate and still put up points

Carolina would like to add a winger with a scoring touch and is kicking the tires on Anson Carter in Columbus. Don't expect Fredrik Modin to be available as GM Doug MacLean is trying to re-sign the former Tampa forward with the heavy shot.

listed under "likely moving"
Bryan Berard
Defense, Blue Jackets
Probable destination:
Atlanta

The Thrashers are looking for a power play quarterback with more upside than the likes of Greg de Vries, Steve McCarthy or Niclas Havelid. Berard fits the bill, although he has deficiencies in his own zone that limit his effectiveness. The Tampa Bay Lightning may also be interested.

Anson Carter
Right wing, Blue Jackets
Probable destination:
Vancouver

Like teammate Berard, Carter is an unrestricted free agent expected to be moved out of Columbus. The Canucks never wanted to lose him, so he's a natural fit to return to B.C. He could be once again reunited with the Sedin twins in Vancouver. The Penguins are also interested.

in limbo

Fredrik Modin
Left wing, Blue Jackets
Probable decision:
No trade
2007-08 team: Columbus

It's no secret that the Tampa Bay Lightning have serious interest in bringing Modin back, but the Jackets have even more interest in keeping the former Stanley Cup winner in the fold. Unlike Berard and Carter, Modin is expected to remain a part of the Columbus rebuilding plan.

can you call it a rebuilding plan if youve never had a winning record, or never made the playoffs?

13? ill take him

sure hell disappear when the weather gets warm, but thats better in my book than disappearing when the weather gets cold...

Yep....

That'll be good for Nash, and if the Red Wings do what I think they'll do (sign Forsberg if healthy) this off-season, I'll take that as it will move Zetterberg to Center full-time (he's better on Defense too)

But that's way off in the future...and you never know, with Datsyuk in a walk year he might just show up in the playoffs....

Bryan Berard and Columbus is "not working out" according to sources today. The BJs should be able to get a nice return on Bryan with several contending teams looking for power play help...look to Atlanta.

Sad when news outlets refer to us as "the BJs"...

Man, has it really been over a decade since he was the #1 pick in the NHL draft? He hasn't really seemed to "work out" anywhere he has been.

I really like Fritsche, especially being only 21. Hainsey is another good young player who just need to become more consistent. Eventually the light has to click on for Zherdev (probably right about the time he is leaving Columbus). Throw in Klesla and Svitov and there are some great components to build around the likes of Nash, Leclaire and Vyborny. Maybe I am just being naive, but if this team could ever learn to play consistently, they could be decent.

It's better than being called the Dead Things trust me.

Well Berard has had a tough go of it too. Losing sight in one eye is something a lot of players don't even attempt to come back from.

Fritsche is one of the few players who gives 100% whether it's 5-1 or 1-6. He's relatively consistent and just needs to learn to finish.

I wouldn't include Vyborny in that list. He's 31 now and might be on the block in a year or two to a contender if the Blue Jackets aren't going anywhere. Not this year, obviously....

Klesla is the next great NHL defenseman in the waiting. He could easily develop into a defensive stopper ala Stevens with the offensive side like Pronger. It's just a matter of getting him some help.

Kind of Interesting

Citing sources, the paper claims at least two teams have contacted defenseman Adam Foote to ask if he would drop his no-trade clause to help make a deadline deal.
"I started hearing that a couple of weeks ago," MacLean said. "If I find out who it is ... that's out-and-out tampering."
MacLean told Foote that the team will not trade him, nor will they part with left wing Fredrik Modin, who the team is close to signing to a new contract extension.
