Rose Bowl: USC 38, Penn St. 24 (Final)

I'm not officially buying into this myth of the Big 10 being a joke.

I'd like to see an Oregon or Arizona State make a Rose Bowl in the future.

The Pac-10 is riding USC's coattails, and I wonder what will happen if another team from that conference makes it to Pasadena (Eventually, someone else has to make it to that game from that conference)

If Penn State was matched against the Ducks from Eugene and got blasted, then I'd understand.

I will NOT buy into it until ANOTHER Pac 10 team does the same.

SC makes that conference looks good.

'Cept the Pac 10 went 5-0 in bowls, and your Big 10 is 1-5. Hard to argue that the Big 10 is looking like shit this year. Doesn't mean it's down forever, but it's hard to argue otherwise with a straight face this season.

The Pac 10 played a higher ranked team 3 times, and won each - Arizona (NR) over BYU (17), Oregon (15) over Oklahoma State (13), Oregon State (24) over Pitt (18)...

I don't know what else you can ask them to do to "prove" themselves. Now, I don't like it any more than you - but the Pac 10 proved their worth this season while the big 10 has not.

How about they don't get owned by the mountain west conference during the regular season?

Just sayin'.

Great post. I agree.

Seriously, it's a valid point. We can't discount the whole season when evaluating a conference. My post was just about bowl season. Pac 10 has stepped up in those games. Plain and simple.

Honestly, I'd probably say the same thing if the Big 10 had the Pac 10's bowl record at the moment.

So they win a game in LA, home of USC, that they probably would have won no matter where it was played. As a conference they played exactly zero games out of region.

I don't know that the Big 10 would have done any better, but at least they'd have made more money, or had fewer expenses, if some of the games had been played within the Big 10s region.

There was mention of Penn State selling 20K tickets, that still left 80K to fill out the Rose Bowl and you could tell from the sea of Garnet just where the loyalties of the rest of the crowd were.

Not even trying to make any excuses whatsoever...but to me, it's not just about "fan support". I believe there's a psychological advantage to playing in your region. Maybe it's nowhere near what I believe it to be, maybe it is. But I really believe there's something to be said for a team having the mindset of "this is our turf". Like, even if tOSU was to play Pac10 in Wisconsin, I believe there would be a feeling of "This is B10 country"...meh, maybe I'm just grasping at straws at this point. It's fucking frustrating tho. If USC was really THAT good, they wouldn't lose to Oregon St. I also love how when they do lose that game, it's "there are letdowns"...but when they beat tOSU or PSU, it's never because either had a letdown, or a bad game or whatever. Blah.

When SC is focused, like a bowl game or a "big game" in the regular season, there are few teams who can run with them. Oregon State, I think, was under the radar and SC didn't take them seriously. That's not an excuse for SC, in fact I think losing to a bad team (Oregon State proved to be better than bad, I guess, but still isn't SC's level) is worse than losing the "big game" But... nonetheless - SC comes to beat your ass during bowl season.

They're a machine, in that respect. An unrelenting, unforgiving machine. I truly wish some of that mentality would rub off on Ohio State... I don't mean Big Game Bobby Stoops running it up with his 1s after the game is out of hand... but, USC very rarely misses the opportunity to get the kill when a team is down. The late 2nd Q TD yesterday... that's what I would like to see out of OSU. Yeah, we're up 24-7 with 3 or so before half.... guess what.... we're scoring again anyway.

OSU doesn't seem to kick em when they're down... put em away. That's what I'd like to see.

I agree with cinci and kyle about the home bowl games. We'll never know for sure, but I don't think there's any doubt it makes a difference psychologically. The Rose Bowl will never be a neutral field as far as any non Pac-10 team is concerned, as long as it's not Washington playing or Oregon playing. To a lesser extent, neither are the Orange or Sugar given the tie-ins.

All it takes is Fla St or Miami being good again to become what USC is to the Rose. But as long as Va Tech keeps winning, it will stay pretty neutral.

For the Sugar, a game in New Orleans is essentially a home game for all the SEC West teams and UGa and UF from the East.

Had the Cotton gotten the last BCS bowl slot instead of the Fiesta, the same could be said about the Big 12.

Out of the five programs with 800 wins, two are from the B12, and two are from the B10, with ND being the other. Seems like the powers that be are trying to even the score a bit.

Let's not forget that Oregon State was one of those classic 'let down' games after coming off the high of beating Ohio State. I'm sure SC took them seriously and were focused, because they'd lost to them in Corvalis just two years prior. Southern Cal knew what they were getting into, it was just a combination of things that happened that night to cue the upset. For starters, Southern Cal played awful. I think teams can be focused and still play poorly. Every team has a game like that in 'em. Sanchez looked a bit gimpy, at least he clearly looked to have some lingering mobility issues from the shots Ohio State had given him. Oregon State 'discovered' Jacquizz. Taylor Mays missed over half the game with an injury, and Maualuga left the field after the game was over on a golf cart.

Ohio State will never go for the jugular as long as Tressel is calling the plays ... well, not against opponents other than Indiana and Northwestern, who I think he saves all the fake punts and WR-passes and gadgets for, for some ungodly reason.

If Ohio State put teams away in the 1st half of nationally televised games, then Tress couldn't use his favorite half time interview line, "Well, they're a good team and it's going to be a battle!"
