Rick Majerus (official thread)

I always got a kick out of him but there are reasons you don't see many 80 year old obese guys. I wish his Utes had been able to win the title game versus Kentucky in the 90s. :(

Majerus dies at 64

I liked him as a coach, but he's really heading into a challenge to turn the Billikins into a top 50 program. I wonder what his motivation was. USC had the makings of a solid team for next year and they're capable of charming anyone they want to move out to the city of the Stars. I can't believe St. Louis ahd the same kind of money or alum support as USC.

I do wish he'd do something about the weight. I don't want to see a coach die on the sidelines of a basketball game.

I am sorry to see him pass away, RIP. But I wanted to respond to this post now that I was reading up on Rick today. He said he resigned from USC due to health, but I read another account on that that suggested the truth was that he felt he had to be near his elderly mother who lived in Wisconsin, and upon further reflection he decided that coaching a team in LA would keep him too far away from her. Apparently his mother had some problems of her own, and she died last year. Saint Louis was much closer to his mother than LA.

I still remember reading those stories about how Majerus was cited for an NCAA violation for paying for Keith Van Horn's breakfast when he had to tell Van Horn his father passed away. It spotlighted how bad NCAA rules were (Majerus really was outspoken about that rule).

He was a good man and good coach.

Was going to make my next post about this very situation. I remember reading so much about it and loved Majerus' take on it all.

Had his players best interests always in mind and that's what makes a good coach in the end.
