Dreadful. Glad to hear he's going to be alright.

For those who haven't seen it, or for those who have but are really sick in the head, video of the Clint Malarchuk situation from '89.

Not for the squeamish. 2 spectators had heart attacks, 9 fainted, and 3 players vomited on the ice when this happened. :sick1:

Also, Malarchuk, taking 300 stitches, was in the hospital all of 1 day and was back practicing in 4. Returned to the lineup the next month. Crazy SOB's these hockey players.

Malarchuk story in today's dispatch

I hadn't seen that before. That was some hardcore stuff. I wonder why it is the NHL doesn't look into some flexible neck armor of some kind, like a kind of turtleneck thing. Especially for the goalies, they are always in the way of feet and sticks in their crouch. That helmet front flap obviously doesn't do the trick.

From the dispatch article linked earlier:

After Malarchuk's injury, the NHL mandated that all goaltenders must wear throat protection. Malarchuk called for skaters to wear a similar protective device.

"Just a Kevlar collar," Malarchuk said. "It doesn't have to be a full-body shirt, just something you can pull over your head like a ski mask.It would have prevented something like this."

Not sure why that hasn't come to fruition.

the q, quebec major junior hockey leage mandates kevlar neck guards.

it does always kind of bring out the why dont guys wear fishbowls, it also makes me wonder why we havent seen better helmets introduced. you saw the new helmets in football what about 5 years ago and they cut down drastically on concussions.

i really dont know how to feel on one side.

I firmly believe part of it is a reluctance to take away the possibility of danger or the "blood on the ice" aspect of the hockey. It has always been a big part of the draw of the game. They did a MAJOR revamp of the overall goalie position pads just before this last season so cost doesn't seem to be part of the equation.

equipment was reduced, violation of the rules now cost $25,000 to the team and $1,000 to the equipment manager
pad size was reduced by about 11% and restrictions were placed on sweater/jersey sizes and sleeve widths etc

i agree with you, thats why i kinda said i dont know how i feel

having guys with no face coverings allows us to relate to players, they dont hide behind a cage. that being said visors are nice, but you have guys fighting in visors, thats fair...not. why not put them in fishbowls? why arent fully enclosed face coverings needed? part of it is the tough guy mentality of hockey. personally id rather have guys in fishbowls than visors, and if you want fight better unsnap, then you get cheapshots with guys in full helmets like in college.

that being said none of the stuff we are seeing is cheapshots. heck second only to the olympics i think the nhl is in good clean hockey. is their goonery, yes.

im blabbering, i just dont know how i feel on all this i guess...

I think it's the same in all sports at least professional. Plays like to think they are invincible to a point. They also do not want to be restricted by "extra" equipment unless it is mandated by the league. Look at football, almost all of those guys should be wearing some type of neck collar but they don't because they all feel invincible. Accidents happen.
