I think it's the same in all sports at least professional. Plays like to think they are invincible to a point. They also do not want to be restricted by "extra" equipment unless it is mandated by the league. Look at football, almost all of those guys should be wearing some type of neck collar but they don't because they all feel invincible. Accidents happen.
