Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

Beware the reach around...

If you are a scUM fan, aren't you just alittle bit concerned that your new "savior" handles his affairs in this manner. I mean, wouldn't you be concerned that 1. he'll do it to you, 2. recruit's and their parents will have a definite trust factor involved, and 3. his name is Dick Rod, and therefore automatically is a farce?

The more I get to know RR, the more I actually foresee myself rooting for Charlie Weis once next year.

I've always been firmly in the root for Michigan in every game except The Game camp. I sense that changing. This guy is just so loathsome that I can imagine enjoying every stinging defeat he suffers.

Out of curiosity, is there any record of him giving back to WVU academics while he was head coach, similar to what Carr, Tressell and Paterno have done? I'd be very interested to know whether he ever wrote a million dollar check to WVU's library or cancer center or moonshine research center...whatever. Is there anything redeeming about the man?

concerns about sullying TSUN's image.

The time to worry about what others will think is before you make your move on the queen of the local trailer park.

After the deed is done all you can say is "I was drunk and desperate to get laid". In scUM's case they'll have to admit they fucked up the coaching search and were desperate to win so they took what they could get without a lot of thought toward the morning after.

It will be exactly like someone catching the local blue-blooded-wanna-be-aristocratic-snob-ass-munch sneaking out the back door of the nastiest skank in town. Once its good and public it makes his arrogance even more hypocritical and pathetic.

1. not particularly - I would not be surprised if he does, because there's definitely an element of mercenary hire to this (being that it's the first time in decades Michigan's hired from outside), and you can't let it worry you when your mercenary leaves for whatever reason. Which is why it doesn't concern me. And given what I've seen about the "West Virginia way", I'm pretty confident that RR will like the Michigan way better.
2. no. As one who's on record believing that "loathsome" is an unbelievably far-fetched word to describe RR, and one who believes that the Buckeye point of view is far more militant about this than the rest of the country, I therefore don't worry about the effect on recruiting.
3. uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........no. Certainly no more than I believe putting s and c in front of our initials makes us the resulting word.

Drew Sharp (Free Press Detroit) calls for both sides to reach settlement ...

concerns about sullying TSUN's image.

Believes TSUN can no longer hang on the sidelines and watch the mudslinging get worse, which it undoubtedly will do should Brown et al file their response with promised bombshell.
You have no idea how weird it is to see Drew Sharp write a voice-of-reason column. That must be his quota for the month - to balance it out, it's probably time for one of his tri-weekly fire-somebody columns.

Later in the article quoted by LightningRod:

Rodriguez's agent, Mike Brown, promised a "bombshell'' to CBS Sportsline.com when the coach's response to the original complaint is filed.
Neither side in this dispute has taken the high road, but as many posters here have pointed out, Mike Brown is really looking like a total scumbag. When these guys choose to escalate the media wars, it makes everybody look bad, including themselves. And frankly, it makes their own side look weak and desperate.

I am not here to pass judgment on RR (like anyone would give a shit if I did), but he is not helping his image, or UM's, by staying connected with this guy. I would even go so far as to say he could salvage some of his image if he publicly fired Brown for his inflammatory comments and moved to settle with WVU. Wouldn't surprise me to see it happen.

I suspect RR will never earn the title of "Michigan Man" from the UM faithful, no matter his W-L record. And at least in that sense, the program has taken a step backward.

Posted this elsewhere, but thought it belonged here as well.

Montour's Wilson looks around

Montour's Christian Wilson says he is still a Michigan recruit, but he is looking at a few other schools. Wilson made a verbal commitment to Michigan in August, but had second thoughts when Lloyd Carr retired and Rich Rodriguez became coach. Wilson was recruited by Michigan to play H-back, a hybrid between fullback and tight end. But Wilson questioned whether he would fit into Rodriguez's spread-option offense.

Wilson is considering Boston College and North Carolina and visited Boston College this past weekend. He said he has talked to Rodriguez only once.

"He hasn't been calling, and that's kind of been a concern," Wilson said. "We're talking about my position. It's just the fact of believing him."

I'm really thinking you're being a little naive here. This story is being discussed around the country on the sports-talk radio circuit and while our opinions as Buckeye fans are certainly skewed to the negative, his reputation around the country is far from sterling no matter what you want to believe. If you think prospective recruit's parents aren't doing their homework on him, I'm quite sure you're mistaken.

I didn't say it wasn't being discussed. (Well, I did earlier, but that was the same day the shredding stuff came out and before Mike Brown was firing emails in every direction and before he tossed a race card out there and before the media discovered the many uses of FOIA.....and so on.)

Given the comments about him in this thread, as I said, whatever the perception is around the country, it is not as bad as right here or in West Virginia. I realize that crazy media affairs do not make for popular head coaches, but unless you can find me somewhere - anywhere but a West Virginia source - that matches both the sheer volume and intensity of the opinions posted here, then that's my position and I'm sticking to it.

As for Wilson, what did he say? That he wants Rodriguez to call him. (Which I wish he would. It seems like if one of your recruits is making noise about wanting to be called, you'd call.) But not "I can't trust him because of the shredding stuff," or, "I don't believe what he tells me." Just, "He hasn't been calling." When I read that quote the other day I took it to mean Wilson's heard from the assistants about what his role would be and so on but wants to hear it from the guy in charge.

It's just the fact of believing him.
Of course... what else could it mean?

Seriously, HTM, I think much of this thread is overboard, but I'm not sure defending your school means reaching quite so far... the defense seems to be trying a little too hard.

Interesting compilation Cleve (not many feel good talents in that list either). RRod got to UM late and is left fighting UC (unsuccessfully?) & USF for recruits. Next year will be a better gauge for the type of talent RRod is able to secure.

Lukewarm on Rodriguez? Desmond Howard sad U-M didn't hire a Michigan Man
January 27, 2008 BY JON MACHOTA FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER

Michigan's hiring of Rich Rodriguez as football has not sat well with some alumni who would have liked the Wolverines to hire a "Michigan Man."
Former Wolverine and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard is one of them.

When asked whether he thought the Rodriguez hire was a good move, he said Saturday, "Well I think only time will tell if it was a good hire. The saddest part of the whole situation is that a Michigan Man never got offered the job. That doesn't sit well with any former players.

"At this point, he has no choice but to be successful. Everyone wants to see what happens. Especially after you saw a Michigan Man (Les Miles) beat (Jim) Tressel, who has pretty much owned Michigan the past (four years). And you saw a Michigan Man beat him handily in a national championship game."

...Cont'd
Proof reading opening line: optional :p
Howard also didn't agree with his "GameDay" mates about their comments that Michigan will be successful if it lands quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the No. 1 recruit in the nation, who is uncommitted.

"Kirk Herbstreit and (Lee) Corso also said that if they get that kid from Pennsylvania (Pryor), that they'll win big games next year," Howard said. "And my response to that is the same thing everybody said about Charlie Weis getting (Jimmy) Clausen. And what did it do for him last season?"
