"We're trying to sort it out right now," said former associate head coach Bill Stewart, who inherited the recruiting nightmare when Mountaineers officials named him interim head coach Tuesday.

WVU trying to sort through mess

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- All might appear calm, considering West Virginia is in the midst of what the NCAA calls a "quiet period" in college football recruiting.

Recent events tell another story. They've lined up to form the recruiting equivalent of the perfect storm.

It all started Sunday when highly successful recruiter and head coach Rich Rodriguez resigned to replace Lloyd Carr at Michigan.

It intensified when Rodriguez took WVU's recruiting coordinator, Tony Gibson, with him, less than two months before the Feb. 6 date when letters of intent become binding.

Things intensified when Rodriguez and Gibson reportedly called some of WVU's recruits, including Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor, on Sunday morning. Besides being unethical, it might have cost the Mountaineers a chance to contact them this week. The NCAA allows only one telephone contact during a "quiet period."

The storm came together when West Virginia officials extended their search for Rodriguez's replacement Wednesday, and declined to predict when it would end.

Didn't realize quite how scumbag it was to call the recruits till I read this. Not only does he recruit them to scUM while on WVU's dime, he also prevents WVU from calling them for a week so as to let them know what is going on with their program. Then he gets to Michigan and calls them again, to continue to recruit them away from WVU, while WVU can do nothing but sit and wait for the week to be over?

I would love to hear some scUM fan explain to me how this is perfectly normal and any coach would do it. :roll2:

So it's either using WVU's call to promote UM or making a prohibited extra call for UM, depending upon how you look at it. The latter would certainly have to be an NCAA issue... the former would certainly have to be grounds for a lawsuit if WVU wanted to go that way. Possibly neither happens, but it should be interesting to see it play out.

ANN ARBOR - When Rich Rodriguez was hired as the head football coach at the University of Michigan on Sunday, questions abounded about how the Wolverines would make the shift from retiring coach Lloyd Carr to Rodriguez before the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1.

That transition already is under way after Rodriguez addressed the Wolverines yesterday at practice and has been on campus the last two days as UM prepares for No. 9 Florida.

The biggest adjustment the Wolverines will experience with Rodriguez won't come until the conclusion of the season with the advent of the spread offense.

There are those that question how that transition will work as well, including senior quarterback Chad Henne.

My buddy said on Monday night "RR looks gay", and I think he was referring to the hairdo.

Lets put an end to all this baseless internet rumor mongering.

Someone just go down (pun intended) to the truck stop and ask Claussen if its true, he'll know. Thump?

From the Blade article:

Rodriguez, on the other hand, never coached a team in his seven seasons at West Virginia that finished the year ranked in the top 100 nationally in passing. Under Rodriguez's guidance, the Mountaineers always have been a predominately run-based offense.

OK, I won't post that in the Pryor thread, but I'm just sayin' ...
