if he calls 75 off tackle reads, there simply won't be enough time in the game to get a 40 point lead. Hence the chant needs to be started around the 20 point lead time.

i'm not going to make any bold predictions until I see what UM does vs Wisconsin. Right now I don't give us much of a chance in The Game, but I also don't think we'll lose by 20+ points, either. Just my IMO

FYI--in away games during 2010, Michigan has allowed opponents to run 84.3 plays per game (Source: teamrankings.com). That is the most of any FBS team. Please also note that because this is away games only--it excludes the Illinois OT fiasco.

WM--wanted to hear more of your opinion (or, since you're a Wolverines fan, maybe I should call it "your IMO") about that 40 point lead.

I'm thinking that against the Michigan defense, calling 75 off-tackle runs should be enough to score at least 60 points and give at least a 40 point lead. Why does the playbook need to open up for Ohio State?

What am I missing? Is the Michigan defense going to unveil a surprise 4-3 for this game? Are the walk-on corners going to be replaced by Charles Woodson? :)

The real free money is throwing the ball against Michigan for as bad as their defense is they still have a slight chance to stop you if you try to run it on 2/3 downs. Last year in AA we played the conservative game and made their defense look better then they were, as I said I think Tressel is a little bit plays it a little bit more wide open when the games are in Columbus (final points scored in last 3: 42, 42, 37, vs AA final points scored: 21,14, 25)

A final score in the 55-21 range wouldn't really be unexpected, so not quite a 40 point lead I guess.

Great point. I think if we just consider how much time comes off the clock on an average JT off-tackle play (about 40 seconds), then 75 off-tackle plays would burn 50 minutes of clock. Considering that it would take, conservatively of course, 10 such plays to score, this gives Ohio State 8 possessions. TSUN would thus get 7-9 possessions, and it is conceivable that they would be limited to 66-86 seconds per possession, which would allow the Buckeyes enough time to get all the carries in. If the Buckeyes don't score on their last possession, but just take a knee at the 5 like they did vs. scUM south, then they still score 49 points.

Of course, it is also possible that the wolverines will play defense like they did against Illinois. Then the Buckeyes score on every 5th carry and score 105 points.

The thing I always look at is number of possessions. Wisconsin limited OSU to 9 possessions, against everyone else its a pretty solid 14 possessions per game. Over a season that obviously includes kneel downs, halftime 3 and outs etc but 14 is the number.

So then for ease of math I just take OSU's total points (I know there are some defensive scores in there, it all comes out in the wash) and total yards to come up with the following;

OSU vs scUM defense according to the averages will be close to
14 possessions
490 total yards
46 points

That is giving zero adjustment for scUM's defense being worse than any we have played this year outside of EMU.

So its just another way of saying the same thing you did. There is a very strong possibility that OSU goes over 50 points on scUM and if so it will have nothing to do with running it up on them. It would simply be a function of putting the offense on the field vs their defense 14 times.

Now that said, this is just a fun with averages/stats kind of thing. Random variance can rear its head on any given Saturday.

Just for shits and giggles I looked at the two games scUM has played a defense similar in overall ability to OSU which were Iowa and MSU.

Using their average per possession numbers look for

450-460 yards
21-24 points

Again zero factor for the possibility that OSU's defense might be better than either Iowa's or MSU's.

Barring crazy weather I'd feel fairly comfortable predicting a 47-21 'ish type game.
