The ONLY way that a training regimen like that does NOT result in severe over-training is if the person undergoing it is on a heavy cycle of anabolic steroids.

I am NOT accusing TSUN of having widespread steroid use. Funny thing is, they kept up the over-training for longer than your typical steroid cycle. What I am saying is that if the described regimen was a reality in AA, then the counter-productive results of severe over-training had a hand in 3-and-9.

What he said. Either Barwis is an incompetent who thinks that more work = more results, ad infinitum, or he's expecting players to juice.

On two seperate boards (s&m and umgoblue) as soon as the names Stokes and Hawthorne were invoked, the previous active threads (full of "it's just disgruntled ex players" blah, blah, blah bullshit) ground to a halt. Gotta love the "oh shit" factor. :slappy:

I did not know this till I started reading tsun message board comments about these allegations, but apparently last year's team set a team GPA record. The tsun fans, of course, are using that as a reason not to believe the allegations. But I wonder... anyone smell academic improprieties?

Re:UM is being accused of violating NCAA rules - 9 mins. ago ( #27 )

madlucky1

Phil you're close to the program what do you make of this?
Observing the players they are in great physical condition. They all talk about how much they workout and how tough the workouts are. It seems that this year they had all kind of adjusted to it.

The coaching staff is responsible for adhering to the rules. *If* these violations and blatant and repeated as the story indicates there are a *number* of people who must be aware of it happening.

I have zero tolerance for this BS. Let the other sites make excuses for RR. I want answers...

Phil Callihan

While every other poster makes excuses. Kudos to him.

For any of our friends up north who think this isn't something the NCAA will punish.

similar case involving FIU

Violation(s)
This case involved impermissible workouts scheduled for offensive linemen in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The former assistant coach scheduled three 60-90 minute workouts per week during spring and summer of those years, when it was impermissible for coaches to work with student-athletes. The former assistant knew the workouts were impermissible. The student-athletes participated in as many as 85.5 hours of impermissible workouts.

For his role in knowingly violating NCAA bylaws, the committee rendered a finding of unethical conduct against the former assistant coach.

The former assistant also included a number of other coaches in the workouts, a detail the committee found particularly troubling.

"The committee is troubled by the fact that none of the other staff members reported the activities to the compliance office or attempted to determine if the sessions were proper," the report states. "All members of a coaching staff have an affirmative duty to ensure that an institution is operating with the NCAA rules."
Punishment
Termination of the former assistant football coach.
Elimination of the position of offensive line coach for the 2004-05 season and 2005 spring practice. The team also operated one coach short of the Division I-A maximum during the 2004-05 season.
The number of preseason fall camp practice sessions were reduced by four during August 2004.
For each hour of impermissible activities (85.5 hours), the team forfeits two hours of mandatory practice. So the teams loses 171 total practice hours during the 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
The institution reduced by one the number of permissible off campus recruiters during the April 15 to May 31 evaluation period for 2005 and 2006.
The institution shortened the athletic director's contract by six months and withheld a 2004-05 cost of living salary increase. He also received a written reprimand. For the head football coach, strength coach and assistant football coaches, the institution withheld cost of living salary increases for 2004-05 and made them ineligible for merit increases for 2004-05 and 2005-06. They are also required to attend NCAA compliance seminars and complete compliance tests. In addition, the head football coach was prohibited from off campus recruiting for 2004-05.

Report: Michigan football players allege NCAA violations - ESPN

God I hope there's an "Outside the Lines" piece being proposed right now. :slappy:

RE: uhoh

today on college game day the crew said TP for OSU had tendonitis this summer from throwing the ball so much. Don't tell me that UM is the only school to put in extra over the summer.

Oh, and it's okay for MSU to have a criminal on the football team. but nothing is said about that.

Let's also visit the fact that Rich Rod's 2008 team turned in the highest team GPA in 20 years.

http://mgoblog.com/content/u-m-football-teams-gpa

This alone discredits the assertion that players are forced to skip classes.

Yeah, because the course load for Kiniesiology and general Studies degrees are sooooo demanding. :roll1:

I do think that everyone does it. Barwis just does it to a more extreme level, or at least that's what he said before this witch hunt surfaced.

added some details to your post...

losing the off-site recruiting won't be very costly, because a few UM coaches don't recruit right now anyway. But if it cost them Barwis...

well that would be a pretty big blow, unless of course S&C coaches are overhyped.

I agree that this may be difficult to prove, but proving it is not the only issue.
At least one player in the article was quoted as saying that LLoyd followed the rules. Much as I don't care for UM I have always felt that by and large as an institution they had respect for the rules.

So the question again becomes, will UM change RR or will RR change UM. Will the administration try to sweep this under the rug or try to fix the problem.

Hopefully they are wise enough to see that eventually somebody will want to know what that big lump is under the rug. The only wise solution is to address the problem now.

If RR was willing to bend the rules prior to last season what is he willing to do after going 3-9?

And as for proof - with all the transfers testimony may be readily available.
