Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

Maybe the question to ask would be:

Who else was out there?

There would have been a much larger selection pool had Martin not decided that he needed to make a big splash before bowl season. He shot his wad way too early.

Who else was out there who actually wanted the job?

While the tarnish is building, Michigan is still a program that has prestige. I don't know too many coaches that would pass up that type of opportunity. (except for the obvious exceptions)

I seem to remember at least one major coach's preemptive "thanks, but no thanks" in the media after LLLLLloyd resigned.

FWIW, take most of what coaches say in the media with a grain of salt when it comes to places of employment. This type of event rarely (if ever) gets played out in the public eye.

In any case, RRod made one graceless, ugly exit from WVA. If this were 1950's Hollywood, TSUN would be Liz Taylor & RRod would be Eddie Fisher...and we elderly fans all know how Eddie's career tanked after that seedy liaison.

When I thought they were going to get Miles I said "o.k."
-I knew he would have them winning again but thought it would be great for the rivalry overall in the contradiction of personalities of the two coaches.

When I thought they were going to get Kelly from UC I said "fuck"
-I knew he'd have them turned around and be an absolute handful in no time.

When I heard they finally settled on Rodriguez I just laughed.
-I couldn't believe our good fortune. I was of the opinion RR was vastly overrated well before he went to scUM and nothing has transpired that would lead me to change my mind.

Martin panicked in the midst of a botched search and reached for a "name". scUM fans will regret it for years to come. Don't forget the guy who has to come in and clean up the mess is going to inherit a team built to run a very specific offense. It will take the next guy another 3-4 years to undo the damage.

Martin could very well have fucked the scUM football program for the better part of a decade by the time its all said and done. God bless him.

It seems that the scUM fans I encounter are just giddy about him because once he gets his offense going he'll put up 70 on everybody and it will be great (for them) to watch. For some reason the bruising, Big Ten, puts-players-in-the-NFL style of Michigan football that at one time had them beaming with pride is now old news and has to go.

That's what has me so interested - I am waiting to see what happens if he only produces, at best, a couple 9 or 10-win teams interspersed with 6-8-win teams. His "advanced" system aside, it just doesn't seem like he is laying a good groundwork for a future filled with championship teams.

They will be waiting a long time before he puts 70 on teams in the Big Ten.

Unfortunately, for scUM fans, by the time RichRod gets the athletes to run his system, the rest of the Big Ten will have figured out how to stop his system. Defenses eventually catch up to these trick offenses and RichRod is running out of time.

I'm of the mind that RR's spread won't ever get the best of the Big Ten perennial powers on a regular basis. Sure, the sun shines on each dog's ass once in a while, but this isn't going to happen regularly. RR isn't going to field a team like the 2006 Gators. The Buckeyes have faced many spread-based teams and not had problems. It takes special athletes to make the offense worth a damn, IMO.

Truth be told, RR's problem isn't going to be getting his offense going, but instead, it's going to be having to build a defense. When it comes to inclement weather, the spread becomes nullified; and then it becomes a beatdown in the trenches. His teams just don't seem like they'll be built for that.

Good point... It won't be unique and cutting edge forever.

Yeah, he'll cherry pick a few here and there, but I don't see a dominant team unless he gets dominant players all around, which is pretty much true for any system. Then it's talent as much if not more than schematic advantage. At this point he isn't balancing that talent on both sides of the ball, so I don't see that happening.

And, his defense seems to me a little gimmicky, or at least a bit non-standard and as it's been pointed out may not work very well in the Big Ten. He isn't leaving himself much time for his, dare I say radical, changes. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the show they'll be putting on up there.

He's already thrown that caution out the window. The changes in AA are so radical that it will take years to rebuild if this joker gets the boot.
