Perhaps instead of chiclets running across the screen you could display the reputation points. Say Mili has 30,000 rep points, instead of displaying 50 (or however many it would be) chiclets, it could just say Rep: 30,000.

I like the rep system, and I agree with most others that the ability to remain anonymous is the most necessary change. The rest is merely a suggestion.

After reading the entire thread, this was very helpful info.

I'm someone who enjoys the rep feature, but isn't obsessed over it. I've been dinged anonymously in the past, and didn't like it, but didn't bother a Mod with a PM asking about it. It's one ding, people, get over it.

Here are my other feelings:

Keep the positive and negative ratings. There's real value to the board with posters knowing that any out-of-line post can be dinged.

I agree with not having anonymous dings. It's interesting, but I don't think anybody has complained about ananymous green chiclets. Ah, human nature.

I like the idea of separate ratings per board. Someone may be an extremely valuable source of info on the Rumor Mill, but not know much about Buckeye football. Also, someone may be great on football, but an idiot on the baseball or basketball boards. And maybe reputation should be in a display mode only on the Political board, but I've never posted there.

If there were separate ratings per board, perhaps the overall rating and the individual board rating could both be displayed.

Regarding the idea of making it harder to 'max out' on the reputation displayed on each post, I'm fine with the idea of making it somewhat harder to max out. But I think it's good to know at a glance that somebody has 'max rep points'. If the rating system were arranged so that only a handful of people had max rep displayed, I think it could lead to more of an obsession by some people about their ratings. If somebody really cares about where he or somebody else ranks, that can be found by sorting by reputation within the Members list (I just learned this, I'm not obsessed by it!).

I would not like to see the feature permanently taken away. Better to do nothing than to wipe out the feature.

And Clarity, thanks for inviting the discussion. Even though Grad21's correct in saying that it's rather sad that it's necessary.

I think this is one of the best suggestions of the day but it still doesn't stop mili from handing out 5 billion rep points to a newbie when mili really only wants to give a couple hundred per se.

I don't think it should be available to all who dings who. It's a private thing. If I make a post about something and Tibor dings me (just an example) for no reason, then it's between me and him. I wouldn't care, but if everyone can see it, somebody might, and they might flip out.

I like the rep. I've been slowly building my rep up slowly -- I haven't gotten any positive rep from anybody that shot my total up real high, I dunno. It lets people know that people appreciate me somewhat around here.

Auto-signing is a great idea. So's the gold one.

Keep it, but remote disable anybody who abuses or bitches about it.

The reason why newbies get a butt-load of chicklets when I, or someone else with a ton of rep points such osugrad21, BuckNutty, Buckskins86, etc., give a positive rep is that the number of points needed to get max greenies is so low (around 1500 points), so when I or the aforementioned other give a positive rep worth 500 or so points, the newbie jumps up quickly. Considering that there were at least three of us that had over 30,000 rep points when C-Dog disabled the reps, the 1500-point max is really in need of change.

I'd like to see a way, if possible, that every 10 green chicklets earns you a gold chiklet in their place...thus, if some had points that would normally be worth 10 greens, they'd have one gold instead. Points that would be worth 14 greens (remember, that max is 11 now) would be shown as one gold and four greens. Points worth 56 greens would be five golds and six greens, etc. This would allow a person's increase in rep points to continue to be shown without running across the screen (if the greens weren't maxed out at 11 for 1500 or so points, osugrad21 would have over 200 greens displayed). Now, even with this idea, some folks would still be maxed in displayed gold chicklets once they hit 15,000 points (or whatever point value would equate to 100 greens), but so far those are few and far between. Maybe C-Dog can gin up a special little graphic not much bigger than a current chicklet to represent 100 greens and the count can continue from there. There will be a time not too far down the road where someone will have several hundred thousand rep points, and if the system is to continue to keep points given to posters, something should be set up to display that.

Are some people's egos so fragile that they need golden chicklets for their posts?

Keep Rep with modifications...auto sign and Admin/Mod warnings for any comment that crosses the line....if someone doesn't get the point, they can go on a temporary or permanent hiatus. However, if all rep is signed....the number of negative reps will go down.

--- If you hate rep or get frustrated with it, disable it. Don't whine about it in posts or to Clarity. If someone really irritates you...put them on ignore.

It is pathetic that this whole discussion is necessary.
Grad hit it right on the head with me, especially the last sentence.

i voted too soon. i picked keep it as is, but i like the ideas of getting rid of the anonymous dings and making it take longer to max out.

i really dont understand why people get so uptight about these things. its just reputation points.

maybe you should add a feature where you can disable somebodies rep points remotely if they bitch about it. bitching about somebody dinging you gets an automatic ding in my book, and im pretty sure it does with others too. i know ive gotten anonymous dings that made no sense.....i didnt get on the thread bitching about it. who really cares?

Amen. To everything that you said. Some people need to lighten the fuck up............

I see this as a case whereas we have a few oversensitive posters crying over something and ruining it for most of us that like it. Turn it off! (I freely admit to avoid pissing matches with folks and am sure that there have been many). Maybe i'm wrong, but I bet this is a case where a "few" are going to try to deny the "many" something extra because of a "traumatic experience." Wasn't this board founded on the principles of freedom of speech, common sense, and posters not acting like 12 yr olds? I say give me BUCKEYE PLANET or GIVE ME DEATH!

well, normally I would agree wtih you regarding the "few", but as this pathetic thread has shown, there are plenty more whiners and crybabies on this site than even I thought of.

I agree. It's amazing the crap that Clarity has to endure because people in here aren't mature enough to handle it. Case in Point:
One of the mods "dinged" me (he shall remain nameless) anonymously. I asked one of the other mods on the site who it was and he told me. So I dinged this guy back with a comment like "I know it was you". Anyway, I thought he might get a kick out of it or ding me back. Instead, the complete loser sent me a PM saying my behavior was inappropriate and that he would email Clarity to complain. Needless to say, Clarity never said anything about it. :slappy:

The worst is when you get dinged without a comment. At least try to come up with some creative comment. Of course, you can be like Bucknutty and make a lame goat reference. :roll1:

Well, well, well, mister "I never complain about the rep system" is whining like a little school girl. :tibor: How appropriate. "Oh, please moderator, someone dinged me anonymously, please, please tell me who it was!" :tibor:

Classic. And who's doing the crying in this thread ... you :tibor: Let's see, you're crying about BuckNutty's goat reference, you're crying about my ding. Seems like you need to get a grip little girl. When I had a problem with you I tried to settle it off the boards in PMs. Who's on this thread whining about things in public? Yep ... :tibor:

Since you'd like this in the open Tibs, let's get it in the open. I dinged you, and did it for several reasons. First and foremost, you were trolling. I never said your behavior was inappropriate (care to see the PMs, or would you rather tell your "version") other than in the sense of trolling. Secondly, you've been dinging folks back for some time now. For some reason, you seem to know exactly who left you a ding in every case. So, I decided to leave you a few anonymous dings to see how quickly I received one back ... rather quickly I must say. So it was obvious that someone was giving you anonymous information. I'm sure all the other folks on the board and in this thread who are saying that the rep system should NOT be anonymous would like to have the advantage you enjoyed. Sadly, you just put whoever was helping you on the spot. So let's not play this little game where you act like this was the only instance where you asked a mod who it was that left a ding. In fact you bragged in one of your rep comments (to a different member) that you had someone "working on the inside" and telling you who was dinging you. This is what upsets me. The system (and Clarity stated it many times) was to be anonymous. It isn't fair to the other members that someone would be revealing this information ... period.

I also didn't say that I would email Clarity to complain. Spin away :tibor: You know I simply forwarded the same PM that I sent you on to Clarity. Why do you know this? Because I told you as much in the PM ... sissy. What you don't know is that I sent a different PM to Clarity stating that I didn't really care about all the other crap that involved you EXCEPT, that someone was handing out supposedly anonymous information. Needless to say, Clarity DID respond ... just not to you (apparently). Care to ask Clarity for those PMs? Really think you know what's going on behind the scenes at Buckeye Planet Tibs? Care to wager a guess as to why the rep system is down at the moment and Clarity is considering removing what is a headache for him? I have a guess.

Seems like you've got your panties in a awfully big wad Tibor. I absolutely LOVE your comment "The worst is when you get dinged without a comment". I could pull up dozens of dings that you left folks without comment and unsigned. Hypocrite. Would you care to have more of your shenanigans revealed? I'll expect your ding when the system is back up and running.
