I've defended no one, Josh. Just counseled everyone not to judge too early or without sufficient evidence. And maybe to recognize that it isn't easy to step into the shoes of someone who is confronted with horrific stories about a close friend. A lot of people have said, "Well, I would have acted another way from what Paterno did" who have never been confronted by circumstances remotely like this. What is Paterno's history in the Big Ten? He has coached in it less than 20 years, won 3 Big Ten titles, and one Rose Bowl. Seems to me there are other iconic figures with long, legitimate ties to the Big Ten who could be recognized in this manner.
