Reds Tidbits (2013 Season)

He played as much CF as LF. I don't know a ton about his defense, but from his metrics (take it for what you will) he is a good left fielder and an average to slightly below average center fielder. Of course despite what some people think, Stubbs is just an average center fielder too.

I don't think they'd give up the "worlds greatest cf" dream for a guy who can actually hit.

This braintrust loves them some all glove, literally no hit fast CF.

Shame is parra could probably be had and would seemingly fit.

More lost seasons, HML when it comes to the Reds luckily I expect it now. Don't want management to get my hopes or watch the direction this thread goes. Actually, the discussions here are more entertaining that the Reds are. Fuckers!

Ryan Ludwick - OF - Reds

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that Ryan Ludwick will turn down his $5 million mutual option for 2013, but that the Reds will attempt to keep him.

Ludwick batted .275/.346/.531 with 26 home runs, 80 RBI and an .877 OPS this season, so it's no surprise that he'll turn down his end of the option in hopes of getting a multi-year deal. However, there is mutual interest in the 34-year-old returning to Cincinnati next season.
Not a huge surprise- with the season he had, he can definitely get more than $5MM a year. I'd be fine with seeing him back at a reasonable price.

First trade of the offseason made. Chris Young and cash to Oakland for Cliff Pennington and Yordy Cabrera (a former 2nd round pick not putting up very good numbers in high A). Cabrera was then sent to Miami for Heath Bell.

Pennington is not very good, and a prospect like Cabrera is a dime a dozen. Young is not very good, but a big upgrade over Stubbs. A much better fielder, more pop, and even though he is not very good at getting on base he is still better than Stubbs's worthless ass.

If I find out the Dbacks ate most of Young's contract I will be ticked the Reds didn't go after him. Not much to get him, and possibly cheap for 2 years. Plenty of time for Hamilton to learn CF. Instead we will be stuck with Derp Fucktard patrolling CF and striking out every 3 at bats.

Chris Young hit just .231 this past season for the D-backs. So why did the A's want him? Well, the CF provides solid defense and pop, and that combination has made him one of the more valuable outfielders in the NL in the past three seasons. Here are the OF leaders in the NL in wins above replacement (WAR) in that span:

Player, Team ............ WAR

Ryan Braun, MIL ......... 20.0
Andrew McCutchen, PIT ... 15.8
Michael Bourn, HOU/ATL .. 14.3
Jason Heyward, ATL ...... 14.2
Matt Holliday, STL ...... 13.2
Giancarlo Stanton, MIA .. 12.0
Chris Young, ARI ........ 11.7

Oh, I know in the 2 years prior to last he was pretty good. His defense in really good, he hits home runs, and steals bases. Although you do have to take some of that WAR with a grain of salt. That is 7th out of NL only teams, plus it was for 3 years. That leaves out guys like Dexter Fowler, John Jay, and Bryce Harper. Plus there are guys like Matt Kemp who had 1 bad year in that time. So I would put him in that timeframe top 20, maybe 15 (out of what, 50 players). Yet last year was his worst out of the 3. Hence my statement that he isn't that good. Yet still much, much better than Stubbs.

With all that said, Young is exactly what this team needed. A guy who would be a clear improvement, on a 2 year contract (perfect timeframe for the new guy being groomed for CF), DBacks willing to send money with him, and did not cost much player wise. Yet the Reds let the A's have him for some used jockstraps. The only hope I have is the DBacks were stuck on getting a SS, and for some reason think Pennington is the answer (the answer to what, I don't know). The Reds only have Didi to offer there, and they would not deal Cozart. Of course I bet Didi could be as good as Pennington's worthless ass. He makes Drew Stubbs look like Babe Ruth at the plate, and his defense is only ok.

Why can't the Reds turn their piece of shit players into something useful like this?

Because Walt's track record (Patterson/Tavares/Stubbs) indicates he has a whole different perception of reality when it comes to what defines a "good" CF.

He's going to do what he's done for the past several off seasons....not a fucking thing and hope a bunch of guys have career years.

For as much as I love the fact that the Whiny Bitches choked against the Giants too, it doesn't help the Reds one bit.

We all know they're going to sit on their hands this offseason, but now they have a built-in excuse... The Giants were a Team of Destiny, the Reds were good enough, just not lucky enough, and all the Reds need to do is ride it out with the current group intact and wait for their luck to change.

I'm sure there's somebody on RZ right now coming up with some sort of stats-based argument for this, explaining how there's no such thing as timely hitting, that giving up a meatball to the league MVP with the bases jacked is a purely random occurrence, and that Mike Leake and Drew Stubbs are good enough to be on a team with winning aspirations.
