Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

I know it would be a ridiculously big bullet to bite, but.......

Cliff Lee is on waivers. Let's discuss.

Awesome left handed pitcher in the rotation with Cueto, Latos Lee and move one of Bailey, Arroyo and Leake to the long relief role or as trade bait. The rotation is missing a lefty and Cliff Lee has been bought to make a World Series run before. How much would he cost and would it be worth it? I don't write the checks but, damn.

Intriguing for sure.. But, does Jocketty have the money to rent a player of Cliff Lee's caliber for the rest of the season? That would be my biggest question.

Let's nevermind for a moment that players are put on waivers all the time this time of year, only to be revoked... He would be a millstone around the neck of the club. Here are his contract details:

11:$11M
12:$21.5M
13:$25M
14:$25M
15:$25M
16:$27.5M club option

That wouldn't be a rental, that would be a lower-middle class person assuming a rich person's upside-down mortgage.

He'll probably pass through waivers. I doubt many teams are willing to take on that contract, and I bet Philly would let a team have him if they claim him.

With that said, I am sure Philly knows they will have to eat some of that contract. How much they are willing to eat is unknown, but they would probably have to pay close to half of it for teams willing to take on Lee. Of course even then I am not sure the Reds are willing to take on a 12 million a year pitcher.

Replacing Leake with Lee would be nice, but way too many variables to even begin to know if there is a possibility there. I will wait to see what rumors come out.

This because Bruce is .069/.069/.069 for his lifetime off Wandy Rodriguez (2H, 15K, 0BB in 29PA).

I had not realized this (from an article on ESPN):

Baseball America's top seven Reds prospects entering 2008 season: Jay Bruce, Homer Bailey, Joey Votto, Johnny Cueto, Drew Stubbs, Devin Mesoraco, Todd Frazier.

Having your top 7 all reach the majors and contribute is about like winning the lottery.

In fact, Baseball America's overall rankings across all teams had:

Bruce #1
Bailey #9
Cueto #34
Votto #44
Stubbs #100

However, to temper enthusiam for how prescient BA was, there was this gem:

Best Strike-Zone Discipline: Paul Janish
