Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

To the whole Costanzo thing, have you guys seen the load of suck in Louisville this year? He and Janish were the only guys hitting at all, and we all know how Janish has fared in the majors. There simply is nothing in the minors to bring up (including AA too), and nothing in the majors to pick up.

Of course that goes back to the failure at the beginning of the year, but at this point the Reds are stuck with Costanzo until July when someone will be willing to send off some of their backups for minor league also rans. I would also like to see Cairo sent packing and just bring back Janish. He struggled as a starter, but as a backup I think he could be useful.

The A's look to be big time sellers at the deadline again and I'm looking at a guy like Seth Smith who's really coming on. Guy plays LF in maybe the worst ballpark in the league. He's picking it up in May after a pretty bad April. If he can hit HR's in Oakland he can launch em in Cincy. 29 years old, makes about 2.4 mil a year. Only batting about .230 but thats .40 up from April. .280/20/80/10 are better than we are going to get as it stands out there.

Oh and he's another Lefty bat.

The guy that stands out to me is David DeJesus. He makes a little over 4 million which is not bad, is left handed, is damn good against righties, and most importantly he gets on base (career .357 OBP and .379 this year). He also would not cost an arm and a leg (probably a couple mid level prospects), and the Reds have shown a willingness to trade with the Cubs. Heisey and DeJesus in LF would actually be a pretty good combo. Get rid of Cairo, call up Janish, and let Frazier play first the handful of times Votto needs an off day.

That is about the best I could come up with for the limitations the Reds have.

Of course DeJesus cannot steal bases so Dusty would veto it even though he would be a solid #1 or #2 hitter. Heck, DeJesus at #1 and Hanigan at #2 would be a nice top of the lineup. Yet no speed, so once again, even though they would get on base a ton in front of Votto they would not be able to "put pressure on the defense."

I've been asking for Giambi as the LH bat off the bench for a while now. Dude can still turn on any fastball you send his way and, god forbid, maybe his plate discipline could rub off on one or two of the younger hackers.

That one should be doable.

I agree.

It speaks more to how bad the rest of the lineup is than a true irrational desire to see Votto play 162 games. Just saying right now, they don't win but a game or two of any DL stint Votto goes on.

As for just how bad the offense is I submit to you, NL (16 teams) team wOBA ranks by position;

1B-1st
RF-4th
C--7th
SS-10th
LF-12th
2B-13th
CF-14th
3B-16th

Team Runs scored: 4th worst
Team Runs allowed: 4th best

Which leads me to conclude;
A) Its the offense stupid
B) 3B, CF and LF are offensive balck holes and, forget what he should do or has done in the past, YTD Phillips/2B is just as much a black hole as anyone.

The good news as it were, LF should theoretically be the easiest position to fill with a bigger bat and 2B has a track record for being much better than that.

They better not stand pat at the trade deadline, this team is too offensively challenged. The bench gets better when guys like Heisey and Frazier are on it (where they belong) rather than starting.

and perhaps some help from his friend Mr. Roid. At this point he is close to retirement. So if he gets caught no big deal. Just retire. Plus he has already been nailed for using them so it's not like it would tarnish his rep. Might as well go out in a blaze of glory.

yeah, if he wants to go out in a blaze of Benoit then as long as he's productive I really don't give a shit anymore.

Bruce's last cold spell didn't actually last that long (as compared to his cold spells in the past).

That's a pretty good sign.

Now fucking Ludwick comes up to end the inning. Cocksucker.

Well, they only need about 5 more innings like to get Leake the win (assuming he can actually go 5 innings).

You know what would have been really cool last inning? Guys at the top of the order that can actually get on base. I hear that's can be a good thing. I wouldn't know for sure since I never get to see it.

Base runners don't put any pressure on the defense. Only aggressive swings can do that. Gotta stay aggressive.
