Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

I dont know a whole lot about Mesoraco,.....your thoughts?

Honestly he was looking like a dud until last year. The bulb seems to have come on for him though - he posted a .964 OPS last year at between three levels of minor league ball (he did come back down to earth a bit in his ~60 ABs in Louisville though) He should spend the whole time in Louisville this season, with Corky Miller as his caddy. Hernandez was brought back for one more year, and if Mesoraco sustains his upward trend for another season I think we will see him taking Ramon's place behind the plate for the 2012 season.

Grandal might be a wild card here though. Like Mesoraco, he was a #1 pick, but he was picked out of college and is actually only six months younger than Mes. It will be interesting to see if one of these guys is moved (to another postion or another team) or if Hanigan needs to watch his back as well.

Remembering Texas having 3 can't miss catching prospects a few years back (that all missed I think) keeps me from getting too giddy in regards to the Reds catching future.

That said, you can't ask for anything more than a chance and 2 potential impact players at a premium position like C is 2 more than we've had in as long as I can remember.

We're due for some good shit to happen, one of them will turn out well imo. Just hope that's not the one they trade :wink2:

John Fay has been writing a bit about Mesoraco this spring and seems to believe (from his own observations, through the word of the Reds' FO, and the judgment of the team members on the field in Goodyear) that Mesoraco is the real deal and is going to rake this year. Fay mentioned a couple days ago that everybody outside the organization appears fixated on the Votto/Alonso problem, while inside the Reds org the real conundrum is Mesoraco/Grandal.

The guy over at RZ that has his own blog about the Reds minor leagues (Dougdirt iirc) has been going on about him for the past several years, even when he was struggling. So thats two voices we've been hearing it from.

The biggest organizational dilemma I see is that they are going to have to eventually produce/acquire someone with some OBP skills that can hit leadoff. I know Fred Lewis kind of fits that this year-maybe but long term you currently have SS & LF and soon to be 3B and 2B coming open. None of the near ready prospects seem to fit the bill.

This era is going to be a large scale replay of the Barry Larkin/Kurt Stillwell dilemma from back in the day imo. Hopefully they choose which prospect to keep and which to turn into needed pieces as well as they did with that one.

A lot of organizational depth in some places, glaring holes in others. I think this is the year Walt has to sort out a lot of it and place his bets.

Dontrelle Willis pitched great tonight. 2 perfect innings, 24 pitches, 19 strikes.

In 16 innings pitched across 7 games this spring, Reds starters have walked a grand total of 1 batter.

(I'm not going to mention that Chapman, Masset, Arredondo, and Cordero have combined to walk 9 batters in 7 innings, though).

The Reds bullpen is going to be filthy this season. Its good to see Billy Bray and Dontrelle Willis both performing well in the spring. If one of those two can bring it all season we'll be 10 deep on the roster. If both of those two can find some magic, CoCo will be ByeBye come the All Star break and thats tremendous addition by subtraction. There are some fantastic young arms in the Cincinnati Reds organization right now. I cant remember seeing a better setup at any time in my life than right now.

The question still resides in Left Field. Can Lewis and some other jersey get it done all season? Can we avoid the injury bug this season to Rolen and Votto? Should be lots of fun.

I went to the Thursday night game vs the Dodgers in Goodyear. What a great little ballpark that is. I had a blast and Im looking forward to going out a bunch more before Opening Day. I'll try and get some pics next time.

Wainwright done for the year.

Punto out for a couple months, and since the Cards can't push Freese's ankle everyday they're trying Allen Craig at 3B, who appears to have some pop but can't field a lick.

Chris Carpenter strained his left hamstring this past Monday.

Now Lance Berkman, the offseason acquisition for RF, is breaking down, and it's only March 5.

Did I mention it's only March 5?

Counting on Berkman to be your everyday RF at this stage in his career is like leaving your lunch on Charlie Weis's desk and counting on it to be there later.

It's just not going to happen.
