Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

From Brandon Phillips:

The comfort level in the field gives Phillips the luxury of spending the spring focusing on his work at the plate. He's been a steady .275 hitter in five seasons with Cincinnati and is looking to make improvements in his approach with the bat.

"I'm working on just seeing a lot of pitches," Phillips said. "If I strike out, I strike out. It's only spring. But the more pitches I see, the better off, and the more comfortable I'll be during the season. Because if you see a lot of pitches when you're up there, then you'll have more success and you'll know what all the pitchers' pitches look like, instead of just going up there and swinging at the first pitch every time and getting hits."

Reds have signed Ryan Hanigan to an extension. Three years, up to $4 million. (per Buster Olney, via RZ)

It's a cheap deal and it provides insurance in case things don't work out with Mesoraco and/or Grandal.

Since you don't live in the Reds "home territory" and they're probably not going to suck donkey balls this year, I'd say it probably would be worth it for you. You might want to check out their blackout restrictions - being in Pensacola you might not get to see the games when they play the Braves and/or Marlins. I think MLB.TV has a blackout checker where you can enter your zip code and find out which teams' games you won't be able to get.

If it weren't for the blackouts I'd probably spring for it, and I live and work 15 minutes from GABP and get all the games on FSN. MLB has done a good job of getting the service out on all kinds of devices - Computers, iPads, smartphones, PS3s and I'd like to have more flexible viewing options.

Rolen with back-to-back errors today setting up a grand slam.

Hope they're just getting the bad play out of their system these last two weeks, because a promising spring has turned brutal.

So Cueto & Bailey are hurt to start the season, and then there's this:

Reds' Arroyo tested for valley fever

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Ailing Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo has been tested for a fungal infection in his lungs.
The right-hander has been sick for more than 10 days with flulike symptoms. The team said Friday that he's gotten blood tests and chest X-rays to see if he has valley fever, a fungal infection found in desert regions of the Southwest. The fungus is released from the soil and inhaled.
The disease is treated with rest and drugs.
Arroyo originally was scheduled to start the second game of the regular season, but has been pushed back to third in the rotation to give him extra time to recuperate. He also was scratched from a spring training start on March 21.
