Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

Well its a day game so Arroyo will probably be too hung over.

Cueto or Volquez, flip a coin I guess. EV has more upside, Cueto is more mentally stable.

It's not Eric Milton so that's progress.

I reacted here before I had a chance to read RZ. I would have preferred Cueto, but some say it's a chance on Volquez to take the bull by the horns, so to speak. He does need some "training" on how to handle big games (The rest of the rotation will too, for that matter) and Opening Day is about as consequence-free as a big game is going to get.

A few people on RZ have said that Volquez is actually a more stable personality than Cueto. Maybe it's just a matter of preference, I dunno. Cueto does let the situation get the best of him sometimes, but contrast that with Volquez who can seem oblivious in high leverage situations. I swear Volquez looks absolutely tard happy out there sometimes right before he's about to get rocked, and that has always bothered me. I prefer the guy who at least knows the magnitude of the situation he's in.

Anyway, whatever. 1 of 162.

I already miss the days of being able to legitimately blow a gasket over something like this.

FUCKING DUSTY!! YOU STUPID BASTARD!!!!! :pissed:

There that felt better.

Cards have lost Wainwright for the year. Sounds like TJ. Rumor wire has them pursuing Millwood. Punto is also out at least 2-3 months for hernia surgery, so they are (again) without any insurance for Freese at 3B.

Gomes caught entering locker room in Goodyear singing "Wainwrights gone! Wainwrights gone! Wainwrights gone," in front of a lot of press. Im presuming his joy is that the injury helps the Reds win the division by 10% or more, and that he was not singing because somebody got hurt, but it still came across wrong. Press will have a field day with this.

Reds react to news surrounding Wainwright

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | 02/23/11 7:04 PM EST

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- News filtered quickly from Florida to Reds camp in Arizona Wednesday upon the news that Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright left camp and returned to St. Louis because of a "significant" elbow ligament injury.
"Wainwright, gone," outfielder Jonny Gomes seemed to declare as he walked into the clubhouse in the morning. Wainwright was 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA last season and won 19 games in 2009. The right-hander and teammate Chris Carpenter form the most potent 1-2 rotation combo in the National League Central.......

Later in the day, a published report accused Gomes of singing and appearing to enjoy Wainwright's misfortune -- something he flatly denied.
"I came in and I said 'Is Wainwright gone, is Wainwright gone?'" Gomes said when reached by phone. "To clear up everything, I came up with Wainwright. I know Wainwright. I think he's one of the top notch pitchers in the National League and baseball. Outside of different uniforms that we wear and different cities we play in, playing in the Major Leagues, we're all brothers. There's a brotherhood there. There's one thing you would never wish upon any other player and that's an injury... "Off the field, we're still human and we have families. There's one thing you don't wish upon anyone and that is an injury. Even if they are on the other team, you wish them the best of health. If Wainwright is gone, it doesn't mean anything to us. It maybe gives them the opportunity to make a trade for another big ace."

According to Marc Sheldon, Gomes was actually singing "You're the Best Around" from Karate Kid.

I think the Reds have a theme song for this year!

Reds playin spilt squad games today...losing 2-1 to the Angels and winning 4-1 vs oakland....Gomes and Alonso both have homered vs oak

I'm watching the game vs. LAA on my phone. Cueto was OK - went 3 innings, gave up a double and hit a couple batters. Ondrusek has been sharp through 2 innings. From a pitching standpoint, it's a marked departure from yesterday's collective bowel release.

Sappelt was in the thick of things yet again for the Reds only run - he led off with a single, stole 2nd and came around on Votto's RBI single.
