Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

I'm at work and following the GameCast since I cannot watch. Is anybody watching the game? Is LeCure getting squeezed? GameCast has at least five pitches this inning as being in the zone that were called balls by home plate ump.

Does Arroyo have a performance bonus in his contract? 200 IP? If anyone would object to a 6-man rotation, I'm guessing it'd be him, his agent, and the players' union. :tongue2:

The downside to the 6-man rotation is that you have to carry an extra pitcher on the roster, so unless you make the pitcher on 4 days rest the long man in the pen, you're down a player on the bench. But again, this is a staff that could do it. I'd have no problem with either Leake or Wood coming in to hit or pinch run in a late game.

The big problem though would be guys getting rusty. If a week comes along with two off days, you're now stretching the starters out to where they won't get any action for more than a week.

It's not something I'd want to see for the whole season, but it might be a novel way to deal what might be a glut of deserving starters - at least until the first one of them tweaks something again *knock on wood* (no pun).

The walks that this team is taking are huge for a game like this. Myers is always tough against the Reds, and they managed to elevate his pitch count and get to the Astros 'pen. Bullpen pitchers for any team generally have flaws (if not they'd be starters) and this Reds team pounds those flaws. That's a huge part of the Reds' ability to come back in games as luck or any other factor. The more walks the Reds take early, the more pressure they put on the other team by having men on base and the quicker they can elevate the opposing starter's pitch count - which leads to more chances against those inferior bullpen guys.
