Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

enjoying your seats?

As a matter of fact... YES.

I got to boo Bill Hall mercilessly, and took a picture of the scoreboard where it showed him as 0-3, logging all three of his strikeouts. Too bad Chapman couldn't close out the sombrero for him.

This HOU infield is bad... Dan Uggla in the ASG bad.

Even with Cordero, this bullpen is stacked. Big difference from April & early May last year when the Reds were treading .500, there are no Del Rosarios, Lincolns, or Danny Ray Herreras in middle relief anymore. Every single guy in the pen deserves to be there.

This teams only weakness is that there is no legitimate ace, but there are about four guys that could be great #2 or #3 starters.

Team is built to do some damage in the regular season. That advantage in BOR and middle relief is huge over 162.

Sadly there aren't any aces in the last year of their contract this year like Cliff Lee last year (unless you count C.C. Sabathia who can opt out, but the Yankees are not likely sellers). So if the Reds pick up an ace it will have to be a guy signed for more than just this year, and probably a big contract. I don't see that happening.

After the last decade, it's nice to play teams and see them boot it around, make huge blunders on the basepaths, take the circuitous routes on flyballs that wind up as ground rule doubles, and generally do all the ridiculously stupid shit like trying to throw out a runner stealing second and wind up with the baseball in one of the camera wells.

I agree. One is going to have to develop or we are going to have to wait for Chapman to become that TOR ace and that may be a while (if ever).

The good news is at least we have a reasonable chance at development.

5-0....wire to wire baby...

also i think it's safe to say I (and others) overracted on volquez a bit  just wish he wouldn't get off to these slow starts

My reaction on Volquez is the same. Actually, my stance may be a little harsher than it was before tonight. These aren't just slow starts, he's the Francisco Cordero of first innings. I said during opening day that his Game 1 start in the playoffs and being anointed the OD starter without so much as getting his visa taken care of were not earned, they were aspirational. I'm beginning to think his very presence on the 25-man roster is aspirational. If Edinson Volquez had Mike Leake's ceiling, he'd be playing in Louisville. Maybe he'll get there one day, but for now I think he's miscast as the so-called leader of the rotation.

People were standing up an cheering when that throw popped up and away - I couldn't do anything more than fall back in my seat and laugh my ass off.

It was definitely a better crowd than last night, but it's not where the Reds need it to be. I think it's still going to take a while longer to catch on. As for the people that were there though - they were fully indoctrinated. There was a different feeling in the crowd than in the past when the Reds would fall behind early. There's and air of... confidence. That made it a lot of fun. The 3rd inning tonight was the best weeknight atmosphere I've been a part of at a Reds game in the 20+ years since I went to my first game.

Also, I have to say that GABP has really matured. It's a top-flight fan experience now. They have their shit together - from the PA to the scoreboard to the concessions. It's no longer plain and half-assed like it was when it opened up. I think we all mocked Bob Castellini when he talked about changing the culture of the organization and transforming it into a first-class franchise with a winning product. It has taken some time (and with as poor as it was, rightfully so) but the whole damn organization seems to be really coming into its own.

Ondrusek looking really solid so far, threw 10 strikes in 13 pitches tonight (1H, 2K). I wouldn't mind seeing him go for more innings in some games as the season progresses. This bullpen could be very effective in close games.

While still way early, if you throw out the bad starts by Volquez, the Reds have been dominant in all phases. We won't know how good this team really is until they face the top of the NL East or the dreaded west coast roadie, but it's really fun to watch so far.

I was just surfing around stats for other teams. You know, checking out the suckiness of the Cards along with some other teams. Anyway, the Rays have scored a total of 7 runs in 5 games. Holy crap that is terrible. Amazingly enough they have not been shut out.
