Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

It was definitely a better crowd than last night, but it's not where the Reds need it to be. I think it's still going to take a while longer to catch on.

Per Fay, P Castellini said tonight season ticket sales were up 30% over last year, and they're still taking orders.

As I have stated a bunch of times, the first weekday games of the season have always been bad no matter how good the Reds are (especially the first weekday game that is not opening day).

The attendance will pick up in May, and I expect the Summer to have really good crowds.

Of course we will revisit this same issue once school starts back up in late August/early September. I have been a Reds fan for a long time, and the bad attendance days are always at the same time no matter what the team is doing.

Don't know if you saw any of the Cardinal's game today, but that stadium was half-full, at best. I just looked at the box score and read this, "34,965 (79.5% full)."

Apparently it was 'dress like a seat back' day at Busch.

I hate harping on the Cards gate figures seeing as how they have the best fans in baseball and all of that, but we're talking mass dissertion by the fanbase here six games into the season. Sure, it's an afternoon game on a weekday and they're playing the Pirates, but this is the Cardinals. That place looked like GABP, and that's not a compliment.

They may have presold enough to get them to 3.3 to 3.5 mil this year (as usual), but there is no way in hell they draw 3 mil at the turnstiles.

The tide is turning.

So could Volquez be the first pitcher ever to win 20 games with an ERA over 8?
I don't know, but I can say that was the first time I've ever seen a pitcher open a game with 4H, 4BB, 4R, a balk, allow a double steal, but still strike out 6 in those first two innings.

...and record a win!

I didn't think he was going to make it to the third. I know he's not a pitch-to-contact guy, but he started to settle down when the Astros started to actually put the ball in play. He has two reigning Gold Glovers in his infield, and three more guys out there who could win one before their career is over. There's no shame in giving those guys a chance to do their thing instead of going strikeout or bust all the time.

Predictibly, Rolen gets the afternoon off with the day-game following night-game scenario on a travel date.

Sadly there aren't any aces in the last year of their contract this year like Cliff Lee last year (unless you count C.C. Sabathia who can opt out, but the Yankees are not likely sellers). So if the Reds pick up an ace it will have to be a guy signed for more than just this year, and probably a big contract. I don't see that happening.

Looked this up this morning on Cot's.

2012 Free Agent Starting Pitchers (* indicates current club/contract includes a 2012 option).

Mark Buehrle CWS
Chris Carpenter STL *
Aaron Cook COL *
Kyle Davies KC
Zach Duke ARI
Edwin Jackson CWS
Scott Kazmir LAA *
Paul Maholm PIT
Jason Marquis WAS
Scott Olsen PIT *
Roy Oswalt PHI *
Oliver Perez NYM
Joel Pineiro LAA
Brian Tallet STL
Tim Wakefield BOS
C.J. Wilson TEX

didn't realize Lecure was pitching...is this just to give Arroyo a bit a time to recover still?

I had read that was part of the reason, along with pushing Wood back a bit to help limit his innings early.

Makes me wonder... has anybody gone with an intentional 6-man rotation before? Would there be any merit to giving it a try? Volquez I think is one guy they'd want to keep on a regular schedule as they continue to try to build him back up from TJ surgery - but the other five guys (counting Cueto and Bailey when they return) each have at least one reason to push them back or give them extra rest. If any team has the depth to give this a try, it would be this one.

Does Arroyo have a performance bonus in his contract? 200 IP? If anyone would object to a 6-man rotation, I'm guessing it'd be him, his agent, and the players' union. :tongue2:

The downside to the 6-man rotation is that you have to carry an extra pitcher on the roster, so unless you make the pitcher on 4 days rest the long man in the pen, you're down a player on the bench. But again, this is a staff that could do it. I'd have no problem with either Leake or Wood coming in to hit or pinch run in a late game.

The big problem though would be guys getting rusty. If a week comes along with two off days, you're now stretching the starters out to where they won't get any action for more than a week.
