BABIP = Batting Average on Balls in Play
A BABIP below the norm can be said to have been the result of luck - because balls in play are finding a glove instead of the grass or the stands. It can be a useful stat for both pitcher and hitters. It's useful to consider against a player's own past performance and what's typical for the rest of the league. It's also useful to consider it in conjunction with a player's groundball/line drive/flyball tendencies.
