Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

Did you watch Garza throw it into a camera, Wood throw it to the 328 sign in left, Fukudome miss two cutoff men, and the Cubies attempts at little ball?

The only thing missing was Sunshine Grande spinning Norris Hopper stories.

I'm like you in blocking details but I gotta believe with the likes of Rich Aurilia, JR, Dunn and EE walking around with gloves on it was topped at some point.

Please don't bring up Grande and Norris Hopper in the same post again. My therapy has been going well and the shit is expensive. I can't afford a relapse.

People on RZ are still making excuses for Volquez. They are dwindling in number, but they're still there and vocal.

Somebody there just asked what the comps are for Volquez, 21 months out from his TJ surgery. How about THE Tommy John himself? In 1976, John was in the midst of a season where he'd post an ERA+ of 110. 100 being the league average in that statistic, when John was at the same point Volquez is now he had resumed being the above-average pitcher that he had been his entire career prior to that. And he was Patient Zero - it was an experimental surgery then and rehabilitation was not nearly as advanced back then as it is now.

Really, at this point Volquez too has resumed being who he was prior to surgery - a below-average pitcher. It's not even about the trade that brought him here any longer. People see innings 2-6, the movement on his pitches, the arm action on his changeup and buy into him. It's all Fool's Gold. They see his stats from 2008 and somehow dismiss the entire rest of his MLB career. I don't get it.

I'd still stick with him. Who else are you going to throw out there and not get a 5+ ERA? At least he has the stuff to actually get it lower. All the rest don't have his stuff, and will still put up a 5+ ERA. At least Volquez has the ability to be a better pitcher.

Just read the SI story. The Cardinals think Cordero got an 0-2 count on Pujols and then hit him on the wrist on purpose? I'm trying to figure out which makes less sense......intentionally hitting a batter after getting up 0-2, putting anybody on base in that situation, or the thought that Cordero could aim for and hit somebody's wrist.
Exactly. Cordero intentionally hit a terribly slumping Pujols on an 0-2 count to put the tying run on base, because he wanted to face Holliday and Berkman, who are both slugging out of their minds right now.

God bless you, Cubbies.

The funny thing is that I don't even know that the Reds are playing all that well these days. It just seems that every opponent is going full retard on a semi-nightly basis.

They all count. You have to take care of the mental midgets to go anywhere in MLB - last year's Cardinals team can attest to that.

The Cubs, Astros, Pirates, and Cardinals are four of the six worst teams by fielding % in the entire NL. And fielding % doesn't even begin to describe how historically inept the Cubs and Astros defenses are.

Anyone else notice the new SportsNation poll running in the bottom left corner of the ESPN MLB page where the Web Gem voting is usually located?

Marty's comments this year are drawing more attention than BP's 'whiny bitches' comment from last year.
