Reds tidbits (2010 season)

He was around 97 and dialing it up to 100 in the World Baseball Classic. At his workout in Houston in December, scouts said he wasn't throwing with full force and was hitting 98.

Bailey is slowly getting his velocity back. He cut his velocity down to work on his control, and is slowly working it back up to keep his control. He was around 94-95 consistently at the end of the year last year. When I saw him in Columbus in July he was regulary at 97.

He can hit up to 102 according to this video:

Lets say he starts out at AA. That starts to give you a very nice stockpile of high ceiling arms all about that stage of near MLB ready.

Hell, Wood, Maloney and now Chapman gives you 3 nice lefties let alone Leake and some of the other righties.

Cueto, Volquez, Bailey and 2 of the near ready guys seems like it could be a nice rotation in the very near future.

Sort out some of this OF logjam and maybe turn some of the depth into a SS and we might be cooking with gas.

Wait, wait, wait. I swear that seems like optimism.

Mods, someone has stolen Jaxbuck's account.

The effect simply not doing stupid shit will have on an organizations fans, even the most cynical and jaded, is truly amazing.

At this point I'm willing to say they may be less shitty. Which is nice.

Hahahahaha!!
I came in to this thread expecting Jax to be in the middle of having a stroke complaining that the reds didn't spend the money on a bat. :)

In any event, he doesn't hit 102 (though he does hit 100) in this video but the slider is absolutely sick to first batter and the outside change up ain't bad, either.

w00t!!! Might actually have something to be excited about after the All Star game for the first time in over a decade. But probably not.

I highly doubt he will have any impact next year. Look to 2011 or 2012 for him to show up. He does have a lot of work to do. His curveball comes from a horrible arm angle (totally different than his slider or fastball), and his change is all over the place speed wise (plus his arm speed changes, and hitters will kill that). He also averages almost 5 walks per 9 innings in the Cuban league. If he can clear those up in the next year or two he should be a great pitcher. Yet those are the big questions, and he certainly will not see the majors before the all star game.

Agree 100%. He does nothing for the Reds this year (barring a minor miracle). He is yet another high upside young talent and the more of those you keep stockpiling the better your chances some are going to deliver on the promise.

I can watch a team full of under 25 year olds with high upside play sub .500 ball a hell of a lot easier than I can watch some collection of middle age shit birds suck it while the ownership tries to tell me the winning starts now. At least the kids give you hope to help wash down the dollar hot dog and the Reds do have a nice collection of young players to be optimistic about.

Now that being said, Dusty is still the manager and that fucking mental defective Tavaras is still on the team so its not all sunshine and sweet rosemary just yet.

Which was well deserved. Homer Bailey was the best pitcher in the major leagues for the last 4-5 weeks of the season.

Well I agree he finished strong last season, I don't think a month of strong pitching lived up to the hype surrounding Homer Bailey, I will say I have not given up on him in the least, it just doesn't equal consistency, IMHO.
That said Go Homer! And Go Reds, thanks for showing me you are trying.

Last time I heard this much excitement about the reds, it was about Homer Bailey. Not jump up and down yet.

First, when your team sucks as much ass as the Reds have you jump up and down any chance you get. Chapman may turn into something, he may not. Its the fact they actually did something good as opposed to say another Willy Tavaras type signing that has people excited more so than just Chapman himself imo.

Second, if you look closer you are actually seeing a way a team like the Reds has found to compete with the big boys. Signing 1st round talent from Latin America. The risk is you give a guy 30M who may not pan out, the upside is if he just becomes a #3 for a couple of years he pays for himself. The Reds could never afford him once he's here and produces, so they take some financial risk and sign him for more money than others are willing to pay now. Relatively low risk and very high reward type of moves will pan out if you keep making them.

The Reds have spent money on scouting and their camps in LA, they are making a concerted effort to exploit the market inefficiency they feel is there to help them compete. That's smart and something I never honestly thought I'd be able to say about them.

Now they are doing a pretty good job of building up a depth of talent in the farm system. Now they have a bunch of guys who are at AA and AAA who will be ready soon. They need to continue to do a good job of identifying the ones we need to keep and trade the others for more propsects. They need to stay away from the Willy Tavaras type of vet signings, they need to fire The Dusty.
