Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Man, somebody is playing a cruel joke. Multiple sources saying it is a done deal at 5 years, 30 million. Video in link below:

Chapman makes Reds his destination | MLB.com: News

This is absolutely insane. I've been giddy like a school girl for a few hours now. I assume he will most likely be starting out in AAA (at least I hope so), so I know that as soon as Clippers tickets are available, I'll be buying all of their home games vs. Louisville

Chapman, Yorman Rodriguez, Juan Duran and Umberto Valor...thats a lot of talent from Latin America the reds have been stockpiling.

As well as Junior Arias and, obviously in the past under a different regime, Johnny Cueto.

My only hope is that Soto makes Chapman his #1 project and changes Chapman from potential to Ace. Chapman will have some good guys to learn from, as Soto and Ted Power (presumably in AAA) are great coaches. Not sure yet on Bryan Price, but at least we know Dick Pole won't be there to ruin him.

Apparently, they weren't screwing with us. I wonder if Soto was a selling point.

Cincinnati.Com | Cincinnati Enquirer | Cincinnati Reds ? Chapman deal confimed

The Reds have agreed to terms with Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman on a six-year, guaranteed deal. The payout is over a long period of time, probably 10 years.

The deal will be announced tomorrow, pending a physical.

Chapman defected from Cuba after the World Baseball Classic. He throws close to 100 mph.

I think Soto, as well as the Latin nucleus on this team, and the promise of our young players were the selling points. Being in the same roatation as Volquez and Cueto, with the Reds signing so many young Latins with potential the last few years had to give him a good feeling.

I've been waiting for somebody to fix the typo. Surely they meant the Reds Ox, right?

My other question is, does the kid really throw that hard, or is his like Homer Bailey who everybody said threw hard but is usually doing good to hit 93?

He will throw 93-95 on average. He can get up to 100, but that is an anomoly. He is a harder thrower than Bailey, but not by much. Yet he still has a good arm, and some good movement. Control is the big issue. Recent reports say he looked really good with his control, but that was not in a game situation nor against a batter.

The kid still has big upside, and could be MLB ready next year if he can develop a solid change up. We shall see. I like the aggressive approach the Reds are taking with Latin American players, and also drafting real players. We will find out how well the plan has worked in the next 3 years.

He was around 97 and dialing it up to 100 in the World Baseball Classic. At his workout in Houston in December, scouts said he wasn't throwing with full force and was hitting 98.

Bailey is slowly getting his velocity back. He cut his velocity down to work on his control, and is slowly working it back up to keep his control. He was around 94-95 consistently at the end of the year last year. When I saw him in Columbus in July he was regulary at 97.

The deal looks even better as the details start to emerge:

Cincinnati.Com | Cincinnati Enquirer | Cincinnati Reds ? Chapman details

The deal with left-hander Aroldis Chapman is for $25 million over five years with a player option for a sixth. His salary for 2010 will be in $1 million range.

It?s a major league deal and it?s spread out over 10 years. The first year it will be a major burden on the big league budget is 2014.

Aroldis has thrown as hard as 102 mph. He hit 98 at workout in Houston.

There just has to be something done of equally stunning stupidity to make this seem legit.

Until they make that move kudos to Walt and the FO. I honestly didn't think they had it in them to do anything right.

The Reds are strongly rumored/reported to be the team to sign Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman. He of the lefty delivery with 100mph fastball.

Is this April Fools or something?? Holy SHIT!!!!!!!!!! I cant fucking believe this. This is so damn great to see the Reds make a commitment to winning.

Don't worry. I am sure they are in talks with Tavaras to extend his contract.
