NEW YORK (AP) -- Free agent outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. and the Cincinnati Reds are close to a deal, a week after the New York Mets released the former All-Star.
Matthews would likely get a minor league contract. He hit .190 with one RBI in 58 at-bats with the Mets.
Cincinnati would be Matthews' eighth team. Reds manager Dusty Baker is close friends with Matthews' father, who also was an All-Star outfielder.

Name the last no talent, has been/never was, scrappy vet type the Reds signed to a minor league contract and didn't eventually bring up. Dusty played baseball with this guys father. Its a done deal.
How any sane human being can look at what this team needs and think GMJ is in any way shape or form a potential solution is absolutely beyond me. That is of course until I remind myself this is the same braintrust that decided to sign Willy Tavaras to a 2 year deal.
The institutional affinity for talentless CF'ers is an ongoing wonder.

- G. Gross unknown into double play second to catcher to third, C. Jackson out at home, K. Suzuki out at third, K. Kouzmanoff to second
G Gross grounded into double play, second to catcher to third, C Jackson out at home, K Suzuki out at third, K Kouzmanoff to second, G Gross to first.
Oakland's Manager B Geren ejected by J Crawford in the 4th.
Gabe Gross hit a soft line drive at Brandon Phillips at second. Phillips let in dropped. He threw home for the force out Jackson. Ramon Hernandez threw to third to get Suzuki. Third baseman Miguel Cairo tagged Suzuki. Had Cairo stepped on the bag and threw to second, it would have probably been a triple play. A?s manager Bob Geren was ejected for arguing the call. Presumably, he thought the infield-fly rule should have been called.

Walt Jockettey said the #reds are hoping to have G.Matthews Jr. signed to a minor of deal by the weekend. GMJ would play at AAA.
