Reds tidbits (2010 season)

You know you've got depth issues when you have two starting pitchers and a long reliever that are better situational batters than anyone on your bench.

Fortunately for the Reds, it seems that if they make it to the All-Star break in contention they're in a better position than the past few times they've made it that far. This time around the pitching seems mostly fine, but they need bats - at least to provide some depth on the bench. I think that might be cheaper and easier to trade for than pitching.

I'm just glad that since basketball season ended prematurely this year that I get at least a few weeks of a baseball season. They'll likely come back to Earth, but I'm going to enjoy this while it lasts.

By the time the break rolls around they'll add Chapman and Burton, and probably be close to getting Volquez back too.

1) Those of you quick to jump on Dusty for pinch hitting Ramon Hernandez instead of Laynce Nix in the opening game of the series, hopefully you're eating some crow since it turned out Nix had an injured back.
I notice you haven't posted in this thread for about a week, and notably missed commenting on Homer Bailey's CG shutout ...

You were saying something about crow? :tongue2:

*News Flash*

"Be on the alert for flying pigs, donkeys and other barnyard animals. Prepare for unseasonably cool temperatures around the 3rd and 4th planes of hell and small to medium sized primates evacuating from numerous rectal regions. Scientists say it is due to the Cincinnati Reds being in first place in the middle of May. What? No, that cant be right. First place?! Hmmm, more news at 11..."

Awesome, awesome stuff! Go Redlegs!

A complete game against one of the worst teams in the league is not the sign of a turnaround.

Nor is one non stupid move the sign of intelligence.

OK, another example.

People bitch on here about Dusty over-using pitchers constantly.

He pulls Leake, the youngest, brightest pitching star up to this point, and they complain b/c they didn't let him pitch on into the 8th inning.

So which is it?

I didn't see anyone bitch about letting him pitch more, they were bitching about using Cairo as the PH. I saw the same people make note of the fact Dusty was in a pretty bad spot having to choose Cairo or a pitcher to hit.

Not sure why you are tilting at the "Dusty's a competent manager" windmill but whatever gets you through the summer I guess.

I'm not a Dusty apologist, far from it, but a lot of people spout off and bitch before they find out the reason for some of his decisions.

So Dusty catches needless heat for the 10-15% of his decisions that weren't actually bad in hindsight. We also have fans on a sports message board bitching and second guessing the manager.

The batteries must be dead on my outrage and surprise meter, damn thing isn't moving.

I really think this team can play deeper into the season as a team that competes...

Pitching and Defense are there for nights when bats aren't...

And we have the depth waiting in the minors to hold down the fort if injuries or struggles happen...Which they will...

Dusty will blow us 5 or so games on bad decisions or lineup blunders...

I like the makeup...We have guys that should be stables all year if healthy...Votto, Rolen, Phillips, Arroyo...

And then we have the youth which will be up and down, Bruce, Stubbs, Leake, Bailey, Cueto...

But overall I think it evens out, and we can compete for more than just through the month of May and June...

And if need be we could swing a trade for someone at the deadline, we have some depth in the minors, just don't do a stupid trade...
