Must be Reds days at ESPN.

Howard Bryant on Baker, his battle with cancer, his family, and living in Cincinnati.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs/2010/columns/story?columnist=bryant_howard&id=5647446

CINCINNATI -- "Light a candle," Dusty Baker says, his lone voice softly skimming the looming silence of the empty church. "I'm sure there's someone out there you want to pray for."

He lights a candle, points the flickering matchstick downward in his large hands, the athlete's hands, dousing it into the cool sand. It is here in the solitude of St. Peter in Chains Cathedral -- funded by Ohio Catholics who donated 12 cents per month toward its construction in 1841 -- where Johnnie B. Baker, born Baptist in California, raised in the traditions of the southern black church, kneels alone among the long pews and nourishes his spirituality.

After several moments of prayer, he rises and walks gingerly toward the altar, marveling at the Greek architecture, the Corinthian columns and stained glass mosaics, comforted, despite its bruises, by the sanctuary and the ritual of the church.

"I come in here before homestands, sometimes a couple of times a week during the season," said Baker. "I pray for my family, for my team, and for Barack Obama, because I've never seen people try to take a president down like this, never seen such anger. I mean, what did he do to anybody?"

Kurkjian on the Reds-Phillies series (he predicts Phillies in four).

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs/2010/columns/story?columnist=kurkjian_tim&id=5648051

If the Reds-Phillies season series in 2010 and the past eight years of games between the two teams are any indication, this will be one wild series. The Phillies won this season's series 5-2, but there were four one-run games, and only one game was decided by more than three runs.

In the four games in Philadelphia from July 8-11, the Phillies had three walk-off wins, including one game that they tied by scoring six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Two of the walk-off wins were by 1-0 scores, the first back-to-back 1-0 wins by the Phillies since 1913.

Reds left-hander Travis Wood took a perfect game into the ninth inning but got a no-decision. Reds reliever Arthur Rhodes saw his ERA against the Phillies climb to 27.00 at one point while his ERA against the rest of the major leagues was 0.27. A Reds baserunner scored from second on a strikeout.

The games have been like that for eight years, but a lot has changed since the All-Star break. The Phillies made another charge through September, this time on the strength of sensational starting pitching. This series will be their first step toward trying to return to the World Series for the third year in a row; the last National League team to do that was the 1942 to '44 Cardinals. The Reds are in the way. They're a young, vibrant club that one scout says "grinds it out every day. They're fun to watch."

Holy [censored]...funniest article I've read in a long time. Not sure why Joe Morgan is walking around the clubhouse naked, but it appears the team is really enjoying the season and having fun!!!

http://deadspin.com/5644328/is-this-normal?skyline=true&s=i

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Mike Leake was observed slapping the naked ass of Joe Morgan, a 67-year-old man, who is both a professional broadcaster for a national network and a team executive. This fact is so weird and creepy, to me, that I will to ignore the fact that apparently seconds after this occurred, Leake tried to clock some Giuliani Time with a different gentleman ? a teammate, it seems, who, unlike 67-year-old Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Morgan, had the decency to be wearing pants.
But in all seriousness: What the [censored] was Joe Morgan doing walking around the Reds clubhouse with no pants on? Let's play a round of: "Is This Normal?"
I have read a lot of stuff about baseball in my life, but I have never come across this situation. I guess I'll go ahead and concede that this may indeed be perfectly normal ? it may be commonplace that a national broadcaster/former player walks around naked in the clubhouse after games and plays grabass (literally) with the current guys. Maybe it happens all the time. Maybe Psycho Lyons slips down to the ChiSox locker room, strips to his skivvies, and hits the cold cut spread. (He dropped his pants on the field that time ? this would be no weirder.) Perhaps Vin Scully heads down to the bowels of Chavez Ravine and greets the victorious Dodgers in his birthday suit, his fluid monologue never ceasing for a second. Maybe the Cubs have a fun little tradition where, after wins, Rick Sutcliffe pops down to the clubhouse, gets naked, puts clown makeup on his dick, and sings "Least Complicated" by the Indigo Girls. I don't know. If you do know, can you tell me? Seriously ? in the comments, please someone tell me if it's normal for Joe Morgan to have been naked in the clubhouse after the game.
