Reds tidbits (2010 season)

My quick .02:

  • Well 4 games into ST and the pattern is starting to emerge. The pitching will be decent, but not as good as everyone hopes, and the offense will suck moose dick.
  • I know harang says he was "working on things" but he concerns me the most. Looking at his numbers the past few years I think the fat fuck could very well be done.
  • Speaking of working on things Votto and Willie May's Hillips need to work on getting a fucking hit. Same for Alonzo's fat ass.
  • Bruce and Chapman look good so far.
  • So did Wood and Leake.
Hard to know what to take seriously and what to ignore in ST but the offense overall has been less than impressive and Arizona is supposed to be hitter friendly.

Jax, this is my first Reds season over here at BP, and you seem knowledgable, but come on, you know with veterans you can only take things with a grain of salt in ST. The young guys, yeah, they should be trying to make a name for themselves.

But Harang is trying to get into form and work on things. He concerns me the most of the SP as well, but if he shits the bed, you have Chapman/Wood to come up and take his spot. If he regains form, he's a Cy Young contender again.

Alonso has looked really bad, I agree. As far as fat ass, he actually looks slimmed down from previous years to me. You could call Pujols a fat ass too. Don't be surprised if Alonso starts off the season slow from a power standpoint, though, a broken hamate bone drains power and it won't fully heal for a year, so about halfway through the season.

I still think the offense is underrated, as I'm a big Stubbs and Bruce fan. I don't have a huge problem with the lineup, although I wish Dusty would switch Brandon and Jay vs. Righties.

But, of course, I'm an eternal optimist. So everyone, find a middle between Jax and I

Nice points Class'13, but as an aside, how old are you, I haven't checked Jaxs' age, but I'd guess he and I are closer in age than you and I. If you have been following the Reds for many years, try 35 or so for me, and you are still an optimist after dealing with the last 20 years, than either great job keeping a sunny outlook, or more likely, how is that therapy working out for you

On a serious note, I do like the direction the club seems to be headed in the last few years. They finally seem to have caught on to how other small market teams have had success. Building up your scouting department, and the farm system and getting as many right when it comes to drafting as you get wrong, is about the only way the Reds can compete, and at least lately they have been trying this formula.

It's always great to have Redleg fans on BP to commiserate with, or heaven forbid celebrate with :tongue2:

I'm not sure we should start drawing conclusions on most guys yet, good or bad. I would say though that I share Jax's feeling that Harang is done. Reds managers past and present rode him hard, and now he's wore out and depleted. It's been that way for a while now.

Well we always need a good optimist around here.

As far as my routine goes, it may be shocking to some, but I have been known to give into my frustration from time to time and just have a good old fashioned rant that can sometimes be just a smidge over the top. Sometimes I may actually even be slightly negative. Don't take everything I say during these rants at face value.

I know all the reasons to be optimistic and I agree with most of them but every once in a while I need to call the Yonder Alonzo's of the world a fat ass when they start out 0-4. I know damn good and well its a meaninglessly small sample size, but I'm still just a fan and 0-4 still just pisses me off.

Someone touched on how long we've been at this just so you have an idea why I am so jaded, I was too young to really enjoy the BRM days. I was aware of them from older guys but I wasn't old enough to really be into it or know what was going on myself. When I turned 10 I got the 1981 bag over the head-punch in the face baseball strike followed by 100+ losses in 1982. Other than 1990 its been pretty much one consistent ass sucking ever since.

Another thing to keep in mind is that as a child of the 70's in southwest Ohio, baseball was king football was a distant second. The only football moment that has come close to Eric Davis hitting that 2 run homer in Game 1 of the 1990 WS to me, for just pure joy, was the Holy Buckeye and I mean it is only a close second. To put a final point on it, my son's name is Eric and it wasn't a coincidence.

As far as the SABER stuff goes, I'm not a card carrying member but there are several of us on here that would be happy to talk stats with you all day long.

I agree with Jax, he hasn't been in Dayton so I haven't gotten to see him play in person yet but for a guy who's bat is good enough for people to be wanting to send Votto to left in order to make room for him on the field (haha, fat joke), I'm not seeing it at all. He should be one of the young ones busting their asses off to impress the managing staff, not slacking off and dreaming of his days at the U where he didnt have to try to go yard with a metal bat.

I don't think he's slacking, he just hasn't hit yet so he's on my list. :wink2:
