Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Whoever it is, he better be a "consumate professional" or I am going to be fucking pissed. I don't want guys hanging around that aren't "consumate professionals".

What if he's a gamer instead?

You hear people talk about "tools" all the time. I want a guy who's just a ball player.

And, Farney got traded for the third time this year the other day - this time to the Royals. Odds he's back in Cincy by the end of the season?

To be fair to Dan O...err I mean Special K...err Walt as much as I bash the shit out of them for the moronic addition of Whiskey Tango, getting a passable MLB level catcher for Farney was a pretty good deal.

Of course it didn't take Einstien to see Farney wasn't all that good and one of our triple headed GM monster is the fuckhead who gave him the big contract extension anyway but I digress. They executed a trade that made us better (slightly) so I thought I'd be nice and say something about it.

Now, does it make up for the Miltonesque stupidity of signing fast Willy T (or letting the manager run him out there every night)? Hell no.

BTW I see this all the time over at RZ in the poster "Homer Bailey"'s sig line and it just cracks me up every time.
Don Sutton: "Taveras is 1 for 11 in this series, and for his standards, that's a good series."

:slappy:

I too will say something nice about the Freel-Hernandez trade. It turns out we also got a passable backup 1B in that deal, which came in pretty handy for a while.

I think most of us would like to see Hanigan get more PT as long as he's getting on base, but regardless he's a big upgrade over the likes of Ross/Nacho Libre/that other guy that I already forgot.

Agreed on the Hernandez trade. It was a winner all the way around.

I'm strangely ok with the Hannigan situation. Sure I'd like to see him get more PT when he's hitting well but catchers have to be rested and I am fine with the strict platooning*. Besides I remember a stretch when Ross looked like Babe Ruth after he was first traded. I don't get real worked up over offense from the C spot if I can help it.

I don't know about you guys but I miss Nacho Libre. :(

* I know damn well and good The Dusty isn't doing it for any smart reason but thats the spin I choose to put on it for myself. I only have time to be pissed at one thing and WT has my full undivided attention.

I was just reading about Earl Weaver in SI and he had a great quote. Came from this segment of managers corner.

The Reds need to hire Earl or have him give Dusty a call.

BTW....I used to play Earl Weaver Baseball on my Apple IIc back in the day.

Thats a great segment. Its staged but funny as hell. I keep it in a folder with my Lee Elia tirade.

The talk of Toronto shipping Halladay out is really picking up, seems to be a matter of when not if. Interesting to me because once he goes Harang becomes the next best "availible" SP with Peavy (whatever the hell he's going to do) unless I'm missing someone.

Hate to see him go but he's not getting any younger or cheaper. Has to be considered at the very least.

Well obviously it was never aired (was meant as a joke on the station manager), but it's pretty funny.

As for Harang they really need to deal him. He is not going to be as good as he once was, and his value is not going to get any better. Same goes for Rhodes, Weathers, and Hernandez. There are players already in the organization that can take most of those spots and hopefully in a year or so match if not surpass their production. Get some more good young players and this team may have a shot. I know this is the same thing every year, but I actually think this team finally has a good young nucleas. Get rid of some of the older guys now while they have value, and then become a buyer in a year or two.

Agree 100%. Best chance since the ASG break in 2006 to be big time sellers and put the franchise in a position to have sustainible long term success.

Then I remember this is the Reds we are talking about and see them either doing nothing at all or overpaying for a veteran utility infielder and acting like we are WS bound because we added another scrappy vet for Dusty to play too much.

Dickerson & Nix in for T-Virus & Gomes today with the Phillies starting RHP Rodrigo Lopez. It's the same lineup order as the past two days, but it looks so much more productive with "Dickerson 8" instead of "Taveras 8" at the top.

Dickerson 8
Hairston 6
Votto 3
Phillips 4
Nix 7
Hernandez 2
Bruce 9
Encarnacion 5
Bailey 1

Wow, he is getting close. Now if he can put in Hanigan more than once a week it would be nice.

I swear, Dusty is not stupid, just slow (well, maybe a bit of both). It has been clear for months that above lineup should be the lineup vs. righties (with some injury changes and Hanigan in the 2 spot 40-50% of the time). Yet he complains people give him a hard time about his decisions, acts stubborn, and then finally gives in to what everybody and their brother already knew. Just think if he made timely decisions.

Of course this is probably a 1 game anomaly and this won't be the regular lineup vs. righties until September when the Reds are 10 games out. Then new guys are signed, and the whole process starts over again next year.

The dude pitching for the Phillies looks like a pure creep.

Paul Bako. Thank god he's catching for Philly tonight or I never would have come up with his name.

1-0 good guys. Bases still loaded with none out. Try not to fuck it up, guys.
