Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

i had the unfortunate opportunity to listen to some of the Reds game coming home from work today.

Damn Marty is bitter about something. The guy is trying to kill himself with all the negativity.

Marty turned into a bitter old bastard years ago. I can understand it though. We get to walk away or turn it off when it's bad. That poor fucker has had to sit through every inning of The Suck for decades. That will flat wear on you.

I'd have been in prision a long time by now if I had Marty's job.

Hairston/Janish

I don't understand it, but anyone can see that would be a pretty decent lineup. You have two guys at the top with the OBP, and you also have speed with Dickerson. Hanigan can handle the bat.

Then you bring 5 guys up in a row that can produce some power/hits/rbis. Then you put Hairston in the 8 hole, which puts him in a place to succeed where the two hole note so much...

Instead we go with 8,9,1,2 of out, out, out, out...It doesn't matter that we have guys like Votto, Phillips, etc that can produce some runs, but no one is ever on base...

and the guys I am referring to in 8,9,1,2 are Janish, p, WT, hairston.

Obviously we don't have EE back yet, but he is putting up good numbers in AAA it is time...and I think it might be time to look to bring up Stubbs/Heisey I really like Dickerson, but these guys are putting up good numbers in AAA it may be time to take a look, especially if we slide out of the race...

BTW WT has the worst OBP on the team of anyone on the current roster other than pitchers...only Gonzalez was worse but he is hurt now...Makes Baker look like a genious in his batting of those two 1-2...

The damn pitching staff is getting it done...We have a good defensive team now, other than SS being a weak spot unless you put Janish there, and if you do bat him 8th...

I would love to see a guy like Holiday in LF, or a legit SS, and I think SS if the position of most need. someone that can play defesne and put up a .750 or so OPS...I think 3b can be handled internally with EE, and by end of year or next year by Frazier...No reason to overspend on someone there...maybe earlier in the season but not now...

Gomes and Nix are doing a solid job platooning in LF and I really like Gomes against lefties, I would almost like to play him in LF and put someone else in RF against lefties, because Bruce is struggling against them...

But with Dusty at the helm, WT is going to lead off and make outs at a higher rate than any other leadoff guy in the game...so frustrating, and then he is going to bat Hairston in the 2 spot, so Votto never has a chance with guys on base...

Edwin was just reinstated from the 60 day DL.

Now you insta-upgrade CF by benching WT and two of the 3 weakest positions on the team just got better without spending a dime or trading anyone away.

If only The Dusty had the balls or brains to that. :(

BTW some 2009 team rankings from BP I found interesting. Reds are:

RA/G 7th in the NL
RS/G 14th in the NL
Run diff per game is 11th in the NL

Pitcher VORP 4th in the NL
Hitter VORP 15th in the NL

Def Eff is 2nd in MLB, 2nd in NL

The two worst hitters on the team in terms of VORP? "Pete" Rosales and Whiskey Tango. Paging H&G for an explination on that one.
