Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

This team does not need another bat with lack of pop, and no way is he better than what Nix is giving vs. right handers. At best he is a platoon option right now, and that would hurt his development. Right now he would only be called up as an injury replacement that would get plenty of AB's. Until then, or Nix goes into a huge slump, they are not going to bring him up to warm the bench 3/4 of the games.

BTW...he has 29 strikeouts in 111 at bats. Not exactly the best for a #2 hitter, and that is against AAA pitching. Against Major League pitching he would be on an Adam Dunn pace. Not sure why the Bats have him in the 2 hole. He should be a leadoff hitter.

I said July and I said if he is still hitting like he is now...He is a guy that will get OB, will take a walk...the reason he is not a leadoff hitter is becuase everytime in the minors he was put htere he has struggled...

Yeah he k's alot but I just wonder if it GABP his doubles he is hitting turn into HRs...I am not saying it is a for sure move, but saying if he continues to swing a hot bat like he is...

I am with Jax I like guys that will take a walk and get on base...I would rather see Dickerson and Stubbs in CF/LF than WT out there...

I am fine with Nix and what he brought to the team, but if we have to play McDonald in left field when lefties through then we have a problem...Don't konw how this guy has a job...

And Jax is on the money once again with his post...It has been great watching us play some decent ball, but we are going to have to score runs and this team is just not suited to do that, and giving away outs, and hitting guys in the lineup where we do is just setting them up for failure...

We suck offensively at SS, 3B, CF, LF...

I would like to see us go with more of Dickerson and Nix in the same lineup against Righties, but Dusty is in love with WT...

I don't need to watch the game to get an idea of what's going on. All I need to do is see ESPN's Fantasy Baseball Top Performers sidebar for the day, which currently looks like this:

C. Utley Philadelphia Phillies
3-4, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R

J. Rollins Philadelphia Phillies
4-5, RBI, 2 R, SB

All things considered, it could be worse. The Reds could have started Bartolo Colon today, who spun a line with the White Sox this afternoon that can only be topped by bad-Arroyo or Chien-Ming Wang:

B Colon 2.0 7 8 1 2 1 2 61-35
at least we got Peavy.

oh.

Volquez goes on DL with back spasms

Reds call up Bailey to start Saturday against Indians

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- The Reds placed starting pitcher Edinson Volquez on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday because of back spasms and recalled pitcher Homer Bailey from Triple-A Louisville.
Bailey will take Volquez's rotation spot and start on Saturday against the Indians at Great American Ball Park. Volquez underwent an MRI exam Thursday morning, one day after persistent back soreness stopped his side bullpen session after a couple of pitches.

fyi.

Darnell "Who The Fuck are you" McDonald gets DFA'd and Gomes is called up before yesterday's game. About damn time.

Homer time tonight. Yikes.

I have now gone from not liking Homer to simply hating him. Two out, men on 2nd and 3rd, and shakes off his catcher twice (for which I wanted a Bull Durham moment from Hernandez). Of course he wanted to pump in the heat and announce his presence with authority. Ripped up the middle for a 2 run single. Then in the bottom of the inning he can't even get close to getting a bunt down and strikes out. At one point I thought "eh, he's young," well, he should have learned by now. Million dollar arm, 2 cent head.

I agree 100 %. Ramon should be calling every single pitch Homer throws no questions asked.

The really bad part is there is no million dollar arm.

Close the book on Homer. 4 1/2, 3 H, 6 W, 6 ER. Enjoy your cup of coffee while you are in Cincy.

Doesn't matter of Hernandez is calling the pitches or not, having 6 walks in 4 1/3 innings isn't major league material in the control department.

Bailey is, at best, a middle reliever/long man in the MLB at this time.

Clearly it won't matter for him staying in the bigs, but that cost the Reds the game. Hernandez called for off speed twice, and Bailey shakes him off with 2 outs and a 2-2 count (he probably would have called for a 3rd one, but Bailey only has 2 off speed pitches). Bailey wanted to throw the heat, and he got burnt. He has no business calling off his catcher, and it cost the Reds 2 runs. It still would not have been the best start, but those 2 runs were crucial. Not only does he not have control, but his head is not right either.

Hey Homer, you just got called up again, and got shelled again. Stop thinking you are something special and listen to guys that actually can stay in the league for more than random injury replacements. Hernandez should have gone to the mound and smacked him. At least I didn't see another shake off the rest of the game from him. I am sure the coaches had some choice words.
