Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

What for?

Phillips was at the plate last night and John Rauch threw a couple inside pitches to Phillips that Phillips didn't like. Then Micah Owings drilled Roberts on the D-Backs.

Lots of retaliation in baseball. The only reason it might not happen is because the D-Backs starter is making his MLB debut and I doubt he needs to put any additional players on the base paths than he needs to.

Wouldn't surprise me though.

It didnt look to me as if Owings was throwing at Roberts but thats never stopped a beanball war from continuing

He beaned him square in the back after Phillips and Rauch exchanged words. I'd say it was pretty obvious what was happening. I love seeing good beanball wars, so I'm hoping the D-Backs bean Phillips or someone. Maybe knock loose the cobwebs in the D-Backs bats. They suck this year.

Yeah ... like I said, what for? If the D-backs had a problem with Phillips taking extra bases on them, they should get motivated to throw the ball into the infield on bloop singles. If they had a problem with his pose after he hit that bomb off Haren, then they should advise Upton to stop doing it too.

But honestly, if they want to bring up a AA contact pitcher and ask him to finish a beanball war with Cueto throwing on the other side, a Diamondback could wind up getting killed. You don't want to fuck with the Dominicans, and the Reds have a shit-ton of Dominicans.

On the other hand, if a team is going to pick a fight with Cincinnati, it's probably best to do it with Darnell "Who the fuck is Darnell McDonald?" McDonald on the roster and not Johnny "I'll run in from RF and go Nolan Ryan-on-Robin Ventura upside yo' head" Gomes.

In related news for all the Reds/Gomes supporters, the Bats played the Durham Bulls last night. David Price pitched a gem for the Bulls until the bullpen blew it. The deciding factor wound up being Gomes coming up with 2 out in the 9th in a 5-6 ballgame and plating two, leading the Bats to a 7-6 come from behind win over his former team.

For beaning Roberts? Rauch's pitches to Phillips weren't even close to hitting him. They were inside, but not potential bean balls. Phillips even swung at one of them, so I don't know why Micah Owings thought that it was a good idea to bean Roberts.

I really don't care if the D-Backs pitchers bean anyone on the Reds, but I think it would be entertaining and definitely makes me want to watch to see what happens.

But the pitch Owings threw was a breaking ball (at least thats they way it looked to me) and if youre gonna throw at someone youre not throwing off speed junk. IMO

I don't remember what type of pitch it was, but it seemed a little too convenient for the timing of it.

Owings didn't throw at anybody. Besides, like Chris Welsh pointed out - if you're seeking retaliation for somebody throwing inside on your Gold Glove 2B, you're not gonna get it by plunking a AAAA scrub.

Let's get our stories straight here, anyway. This "beanball war" started when Phillips plunked the scoreboard in LCF.

Have you seen Arizona's lineup? It's 25 AAAA scrubs. The highest paid player on their team is Eric Byrnes.

Byrnes entire, distinguished, MLB career line: .261/.323/.445

I don't want to guess how big a litter of kittens Jax would have if the Reds were paying Taveras $12M a year and batting him 5th.

I wouldn't exactly call Brandon Webb and Dan Haren scrubs. The Diamondbacks aren't peforming well this year, but they have a lot of young guys that should mature and be very good. Being the highest paid player doesn't make you the best player.

Reds fans should understand this since they have sucked for about 20 years now.

No, Haren and Webb aren't scrubs, but I doubt the Dbacks can afford them by the time the rest of the team catches up.

Just pray you get something decent in return when you ship one of them to the Yankees and the other to the Red Sox.

The D-Backs probably don't want Webb anyway because he has shoulder problems. They pulled their extension offer after 2 insurance companies wouldn't insure Webb's arm.

Haren is locked up for a few more years I think.

The D-Backs are going to try and trade Byrnes and get rid of that contract. He was only good his first year here and then got that big contract and has been hurt or sucked ever since.

The younger guys on the team don't make squat, so the D-Backs are in a pretty good position financially. Jerry Colangelo left the new owners a lot of debt after putting together that World Series Champion 2001 team. The D-Backs have been thrifty for the past 4 years trying to get their books right.
