Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

let me ask you guys this.....

doesn't it feel good this year not having to rely on Kyle Lohse to be your 3rd starter?

If he were still cheap I'd take him back as the 5th starter.

The good Lohse is formidible and you'll get that 40-50 % of the time.

I'd still take him back as a back of the rotation starter. As bad as he can be at times, he gives you a quality start in 1/2 of his starts. That is better than most 4th or 5th starters. At the back of the rotation, I'd love to have a guy that could dominate 1/3 of the time, keep you in the game 1/3 of the time, and blow up the other 1/3. That's Lohse. And that's better than a Belisle who generally looks good for 4 innings and then hits a wall. The problem is that you don't want to pay a guy like Lohse very much and Lohse has Boras for an agent.

Edit: Figures that Jax gave the shorter version of my answer while I was composing mine.

BTW, my buddy is doing fantasy camp this year. He called the other night to rub it in that he bought Bench a beer. Griffey Sr. and Brad "the Animal" Leslie are his coaches. I'll have to post some stories when he gets back, as I'm sure he'll have some tall tales.

Maybe a right handed bat with a little power, but if this in anyway effects any time of Bruce's or Votto could get in the outfield, well then that would be f'n ridiculous...

As for Votto for Bedord, I am all for that...Even tho I have high hopes for Votto, but we could possibly move Dunn to first and then find outfielders...

At first blush Wilson could be a decent RH platoon with JR in RF. I doubt you can get 162 games bewteen the two of them.

Vets scare me with Dusty filling out the lineup card.

Bedards in Seattle now so that window has closed.

I'm not so sure our offense is enough. On paper, if everyone has a great year, maybe. I'm more concerned that when our pitching gives up 4-5 runs our offense is only going to manage 2 or 3. I dont expect our pitching to hold teams to 2-3 runs per game, I'm sure no one does, so the offense has to produce from day one until September.

With Dusty not wanting to "clog up the bases" and all......

Man, you guys have me going from tempered excitement to gloom within days around here.

Cmon it's a new year, spring is just around the corner, everybody is equal and has a chance at the start of the year........ oh thats right I'm a Reds and Bengals, and some teams are more equal than others :(

FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Lofton could reunite with Baker in Cincy

Kenny Lofton played for Dusty Baker with the Giants in 2002 and the Cubs in '03, both times joining Baker's teams in July and then helping them advance deep into the postseason.

Another reunion could be in the works.

The Reds are considering Lofton, sources say, but the extent of their interest might hinge on which players ? if any ? they trade for a starting pitcher.
The team remains the most fervent suitor for A's right-hander Joe Blanton, and apparently is exploring other pitching options as well.

If we clog the outfield with guys and don't have Bruce as the everyday CF if he shows he is ready, then I will be dumbfounded...

IMO Griffey, Bruce, and Dunn should be the outfield...

Votto, Phillips, Gonzo, EE should be the infield...

I think we are solid defensively with that lineup...Up the middle we would be very strong...EE showed improvement last year at 3rd, dunn and Griffey are what they are...Not sure on Votto...

Offensively we are strong lefthanded once again, but Bruce is a total upgrade as he has potential to be very special, Dunn will put up Dunn numbers, I do believe Votto will put better numbers than Hatte in terms of run producing, and if we can get another good year out of Phillips, and a better year out of EE we have a solid offense...

The one glaring weakness again is we don't have a leadoff hitter...

I don't mind guys like Hopper, Freel, Kepp getting days at positions, but they should be just that...Maybe Kepp could get back to back starts, but the other guys I just don't see that unless guys get hurt...

I think Kepp, Wilson, Hatte, Valentine give us solid bats off the bench in late game situations, Hopper and Freel give us speed...

Honestly we are stuck until we find a way to get an everyday leadoff hitter, and Lofton could be that, but where do you play him? If it stops Bruce from being in the lineup I say no...Obviously they aren't going to play Lofton over Griff or Dunn...

I will get excited if we can get solid pitching, but until then it is hard to get excited...

Wait til the season starts buddy. Those emotions you're feeling now will change from inning to inning and day to day. Very disgusting feeling at times to be a Reds fan.

I was just reading RZ and according to Hal McCoy, the Reds and Brandon Phillips have agreed to a LTC. I'm glad to hear this. I know he's not without his flaws, but he's one of my favorite players right now. I know some would have liked to wait a year since he'd still be under the Reds control for cheap, but they'd essentially be betting against Phillips in that case. If you wait until next year, either he performs and his price tag goes up, or he doesn't perform and you have (another) big question mark at 2B. Hopefully it is a reasonable deal.
