Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

He's definitely one of the cornerstones for this rebuild. He's the best 2nd base option on the league right now, imo, because he can do everything. He's a team player and has fun playing the game. We only need 8 more of these guys and we'll be World Champions! Well maybe only 6 more.

Wasn't he going to be up for arbitration?

If not him there was one guy left that might be up for arbitration...

He was definitely up for arbitration. Not sure if anyone else was.

And here's a quote from the linked article....(article from 1/23/08)

"I want to be here the rest of my career. I like it here," Phillips said. "I want to be the Barry Larkin of this era. Barry was the one when he was with the Reds and I want to be like that also."

I like Phillips but he still gives me that Pokey Reese vibe. His BA is purely contact driven, he just will not take a walk.

Other than that, and thats a big "that", I'm happy to have him.

Dispatch

FoxSports.com reported this week that the Cincinnati Reds have been talking to 40-year-old Kenny Lofton about a contract. If the Reds don't want to rush top outfield prospect Jay Bruce, then signing Lofton makes some sense. He could split time with Ryan Freel or Norris Hopper in center field, and he fills a need for a leadoff hitter.
The Reds have no decent candidates to lead off. Freel, Hopper and Brandon Phillips have decent speed but low on-base percentages. Cincinnati's best OBP hitters -- Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr. and Scott Hatteberg -- are set to hit in the middle of the lineup or, in Hatteberg's case, off the bench. Lofton has decent speed, knows when to run and is willing to walk.

Is there some kind of natural law that keeps Adam Dunn from playing first?

Yeah, The Law of Negative Returns. Contrary to poular belief, it does take skill to play at First. Dunn does not have the aformentioned skill to play 1B(One might argue that he doesnt have the skills to play LF either).

A couple years ago in Spring Training we tried Dunn at 1B and needless to say it didnt work out well.

Phillips deal kicks off camp
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

The good news for Brandon Phillips: He has a new, multiyear contract. The bad news: He's fighting a rough case of the flu.
Phillips today confirmed his new deal, although he didn't provide details, which are expected to be released later today. He hit .288 with 30 home runs, 94 RBI and 32 steals in 2007.
While happy about the deal, Phillips said he's "sicker than a dog."

4 years at 27 Million total for a young 30-30 guy is a hell of a deal IMO.....

trust me, Indians fans probably really want Phillips back at this point.....

I agree, also awesome to get him locked up and not have to worry about him going somewhere else...

Just need to continue to build the pitching staff up, with the young guys we are putting all around the field...I truly think good things are in the future for the Reds...

Need another good draft...And don't mortgage the future for a slimmer of hope to make the playoffs...

I agree, I remember a few years ago being sickened by all the players around the league playing well and contributing to winning teams that had been Reds at one time and had been traded trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

I really hope that ownership and management are truelly going to try to put a good product on the field. There is somewhat of a blueprint out there, using the draft and making good trades to acquire prospects when you're out of the postseason race. It finally looks as if Reds management has found this out. Now if Dusty doesn't screw it up, things may be looking up for the Redlegs.
